Would-be robbers strike at Grant
January 24, 2001
University Police responded to a report of an attempted armed robbery that occurred at 12:15 a.m. Tuesday in the lobby of Grant Towers North.
A witness told officers that she heard a victim cry for help, then saw a suspect run out the front door. The witness said the victim then ran after the suspect while holding his head, and she last saw them heading toward Stevenson Towers North. The suspect is described as a black male wearing a green and white sweater with dark blue jeans, a black ball cap and tan gloves with the fingers cut out.
The victim told police he was returning to his room in Grant North when a man approached him and asked him for $5. The victim told him he didn’t have any money. A second offender then grabbed the victim from behind and began to frisk him.
According to police, one of the offenders told the victim, “I have a gun, and I will shoot you.”
The victim then told the offenders he would call the police, and the suspect answered, “I don’t care, I’m not from here,” he said.
A struggle ensued over the victim’s wallet. The victim sustained multiple blows to the head, was kicked repeatedly and then was hit in the head with what he believed to be a weapon.
The suspects were unable to take anything from him. A second witness later described the second suspect as a black male about 6 feet tall, with a medium build, wearing a black leather jacket, dark blue jeans and a pair of black Nike Air Jordan shoes.
The victim refused medical attention. An investigation continues.
