Van Wasbeek nets lone singles win

Raymond Van Wasbeek provided the only victory for the NIU men’s tennis team Saturday against Northwestern.

The sophomore defeated Jackie Jenkins in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, while the rest of the Huskies lost their matches. The Wildcats defeated NIU 6-1.

“Raymond played well today, as he won both his singles and doubles matches,” said coach Steve Rodecap. “But after that, we didn’t fight back once we got down.”

The No. 1 doubles duo of Van Wasbeek and Brent Sitarski defeated Brad Erickson and Joost Hol 8-6.

The Huskies needed one more victory to get the doubles point, but the No. 2 and 3 doubles teams of Juan Pablo Barriga and Aaron Forsborg and Jon Perlman and Tim Freesen lost their matches 8-2.

Barriga, who played his first match for NIU after coming from Mexico, suffered a disappointing debut in his singles match, losing to Northwestern’s Erickson in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.

“We need to be more competitive in these matches,” Rodecap said. “I didn’t schedule the Big Ten schools to visit the campus — I scheduled the matches so we can compete. And we can do that if we play better.”
