NIU swimmers set to take their mark
October 30, 1992
The NIU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams begin their 1992-93 season today with their intrasquad meet in Anderson Hall at 5 p.m.
The meet will feature the returning swimmers from last year, in addition to 20 new swimmers on this year’s squad.
“We have a lot of depth on these teams. We had a great recruiting class in which we got a lot of good freshmen,” said head coach Jeanne Fleck.
The women’s team, which took second in conference last year, could have an exceptional year with top returners Kristen Scholz (freestyle and backstroke), Ramona Minkley (individual medley and butterfly) and Amy Inselberger (diving).
“The women’s team is going to be better than it’s been in years with the depth and the quality of swimmers we have,” said Fleck.
The men’s team is also coming off a good year in which it placed third in conference. The Huskies will be led by Craig Hammett (middle distance backstroke and individual medley), Ben Bell (breaststroke), Hob Scholz (free backstroke) and Tony
D’Amico (diving).
“The men’s team has a lot of great individuals and could be a very good team,” said Fleck.
“Overall, last year’s teams deserved the recognition they received. They worked really hard for the entire year. We have so much potential for this year’s squads and our success depends on how it all comes together.”
