Singers needed for a capella revival

By Amy Callaghan

All ages are invited to participate in an a capella revival of 50’s and 60’s music.

NIU Law Professor Larry Schlam is looking for partners to help him revive old a capella arrangements. Schlam said there is no requirement to participate.

“I’m looking for anyone, of any age, anywhere, any time, any place who is interested in getting together and reviving this type of music,” he said.

Schlam said the music he is interested in is known as “doo-wop” and predates The Temptations. Some of the groups Schlam named were the Harp-Tones, the Heart-Beats, the Teenagers, the Crests and the Clef-Tones.

He said he’ll teach the participants the arrangements and harmonizing. He said he just wants people who are interested in the music to come and participate.

Schlam said he got interested in a capella music when he was growing up in Brooklyn, New York. “It was something to do when I was hanging out on the streets.”

He sang in Greenwich Village, Brooklyn and the Bronx with some of the most famous a capella groups of the day. He remembers that “the fun of it all was harmonizing backstage and even in the bathroom before concerts” with groups such as the Cadillacs and the Elegants.

Anyone interested in helping Schlam revive this part of rock ‘n’ roll should call him at 753-0140.
