NIU has a winner in Weichman
October 5, 1992
When Dave Weichman graduated from Lake Zurich High School in 1989, he had his sights set on winning. His high school soccer team wasn’t very good, and he was excited to get on to bigger and better things.
Off to NIU.
When Dave arrived in the fall of ‘89, he came into what was already a very good program. He came into a team with a Lechner and a Sparacino and the Roy brothers, and fit in and made a difference.
He also played for the Schwaaben Club, a different league than high school, that won the state championship in the 1990-91 season. Current NIU assistant coaches Markus and Karsten Roy were also members of that team.
A physical education major, Weichman has played soccer at NIU all four years and this season has earned the honor of tri-captain. After a slow start, he has picked up the pace to score four goals in his last six games. He currently leads the Huskies in overall shots, goals and points.
A fiery competitor, Weichman is often seen engaged in not-so-friendly conversation on the field trying to spark the Huskies and rattle his foes. Although struggling this season, Weichman feels that the Huskies will still “have a strong finish and end the season with some pride.”
He says that “People are going to make mistakes but no one is covering. It’s something defensively.” Weichman couldn’t really put his finger on the problem this season, but he is anxious to get out of it.
Weichman plans to graduate in December of 1993 and then head to graduate school. He wants to stay on the soccer scene next season by helping coach Willy Roy out, much like Roy’s sons are doing now.
Weichman’s “future is open,” as his mind is not made up on a graduate university yet.
Weichman says he has “no regrets” about his four years at NIU. He likes the school and his coach. “We understand each other,” says Weichman of Roy.
And there’s no misunderstanding that Weichman has certainly enjoyed a prosperous soccer career.
