Spirited teams win in Homecoming activities
October 13, 1992
NIU’s Homecoming coordinator had more winners than he bargained for after this year’s Homecoming points were totaled.
“Everybody who participated in every event won a President’s Spirit Award,” said Homecoming Coordinator Russ Swain.
A total of seven different greek teams won spirit awards, in addition to the three teams that received first, second and third places.
Sigma Sigma Sigma and Lambda Chi Alpha won the 1992 Homecoming competition. Julie Lardino, president of Sigma Sigma Sigma, said one of the most important reasons the two houses won was because they were excited about working together.
“Lambda Chi was great,” Lardino said. “They had a movie night for us, a graffiti night and all sorts of things to keep people involved.”
The team of Delta Zeta and Delta Sigma Phi placed second, while Sigma Chi and Alpha Omicron Pi placed third.
Lardino said everyone in her house participated in some way during the week. “We try to make sure everyone’s involved in at least one event, even if it’s just going out to cheer everybody on,” she said. “We try to make sure everyone can participate and everybody can have fun.”
Sigma Sigma Sigma and Lambda Chi Alpha won Yell Like Hell—the biggest student pep rally on campus. “We had every routine worked out before we even knew who our partners were,” Lardino
said.
Kim Zenner, coordinator of the Campus Activities Board’s Yell Like Hell, said the winners didn’t win because of fantastic stunts and flips, “but instead for rhythm and spirit.”
Zenner said she had quite a surprise waiting for her when she arrived at the Chick Evans Field House Friday for Yell Like Hell.
“They had this tarp covering the whole floor, I understand for a function that was going to be there the following night,” Zenner said. “But some houses practiced their movements based on the lines on the gym floor. The tarp covered those lines.”
Zenner said she felt every house was equally disadvantaged by the tarp.
“But, the athletic department was great to work with. They were so helpful, and my committee had some great ideas,” she said.
Zenner was assistant coordinator of the Homecoming Talent Show last year.
“I think the reason the greeks did so well and participated so much is (because) they are so organized,” Swain said. “Greek organizations put someone specifically in charge of Homecoming and really get the information to everyone.”
