Nominees approved by SA for Supreme Court

The Student Association approved the SA Supreme Court nominees at Sunday night’s meeting.

Four Supreme Court nominees came in front of the SA Senate for approval. SA rules state two of the nominees must be chosen by SA President Paul Middleton. The other two nominees must be chosen by the runner-up in the SA president’s election. The runner-up was Jodie English.

Middleton chose graduate student John Miller and undergraduate Brian Forde. Both were approved by the SA. Jodie English nominated undergraduate David Becker and herself to the SA Supreme Court.

Becker and English were both approved for the positions, but not without a prolonged discussion. SA Senator Nelson Perez said he was concerned because “the Supreme Court was leaning to one end.” Becker and Forde are both members of NIU’s greek community.

Middleton stated the vote was a question of integrity and the nominees should be questioned as to their integrity and not simply on what groups they belong to on campus.

SA Mass Transit Adviser Mikki Anderson said the Mass Transit Board will be conducting a survey on bus satisfaction. She also invited the senators to the next MTB meeting at which the new nighttime weekend bar bus route will be discussed.

A representative of the SA Recycling Committee discussed the Illinois Department of Energy and Natural Resources Conference. According to the conference, NIU has the best recycling program out of the 10 universities attending. The recycling center also needs a new recycling truck because the truck presently in use continuously breaks down. The center will also be putting up a new sign at the center with the center’s new name, the Tom Kennedy Recycling Center.

The SA also approved supplemental funding for several campus organizations including the African Student Union, Campus Welfare, and the CASHE system, which needed a new printer to provide its services.
