IU runs win streak to 3

The Huskie soccer team had an extremely successful weekend with two victories—making it three in a row for coach Willy Roy and his men.

NIU opened up Friday with a 3-0 victory over Mid-Continent Conference foe Valparaiso and then defeated second-place league rival Wright State 2-1.

The victory over Wright State was the more impressive victory for the Huskies because the Raiders, now with a conference record of 4-2-0, were only a game behind Wisconsin-Green Bay for the Mid-Con lead when they came to the Huskie Practice Field Sunday.

After a scoreless first half, sophomore Tim Prerost took a Dave Weichman pass and beat Raider goalkeeper John Mers for his second goal of the season. With the assist, Weichman increased his team lead in points to 15.

Fifteen minutes later, Wright State’s Kevin Harvey got a corner kick that was headed past goalkeeper Jeff McCall to tie the game.

NIU would not rest, though. With just over five minutes left in the match, Prerost and Charles Martel misfired on close shots before Andy Lane picked up the ball and put it past Mers for the winning goal.

“I thought we showed a lot of heart,” said Roy after the match. “In my mind we dominated most of the match … we didn’t pack it in.”

In Friday’s match against Valparaiso, the Huskies accomplished several feats. They posted their first conference victory, their first shutout of the season and their first back-to-back victories. NIU is now 5-8-1 with a conference record of 2-3-0.

Nathan Mitchell had a pair of goals and Derek Niepomnik tallied his first goal of the season. Jeff McCall got the shutout in goal.
