Artistic expression
October 13, 1992
I am writing in response to the irrational letter condemning the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow. It is true CAB concerts sponsored this event last Thursday in the student center. Although this show was extremely graphic in nature, this event exposed the extent and limit of human endurance. All of the artists involved are aware of what they are doing and they perform at their own free will. No one is being exploited or humiliated by this event.
This event shows the extent to which CAB supports free speech and artistic expression. I need not elaborate on the principles of being able to exist in an unrestricted environment. The fact that NIU allows this event to take place shows its commitment to promoting and supporting free speech and not censoring the activities that are an integral part of college life.
This event was an overwhelming success at this year’s Lollapalooza as well as at the Duke Ellington Ballroom. Over 500 people joined CAB to support the arts, free speech and the rights of artists in general. It should be noted that no other university in the nation was brave enough to host this event. Therefore, everybody at NIU should be proud that they are at a school where the administration will not stand for restricting or censoring any aspect of college life.
