DeKalb – NIU will be having its first administrative closure day Thursday to give students a break during the spring semester due to the university canceling spring break to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Classes will not meet and university offices will be closed during the time off.

NIU made the decision to take out spring break and offer a closure day in February and a three-day weekend beginning March 12 to allow students to recharge during the semester and reduce exposure to the COVID-19 virus while traveling, according to an Oct. 21 email sent to NIU students.

The cancellation of spring break has also shortened the semester to have it end a week early on April 30. Final exams will be held on April 24, 26 to 30.
