Insurance companies to vend benefits at expo

NIU faculty and staff members will have the chance to discuss retirement income opportunities with various insurance companies today.

The NIU Insurance Office will present a Tax Deferred Annuities Expo from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Holmes Student Center Heritage Room.

Kate Romano, benefits counselor in the NIU Insurance Office, said the expo will bring six approved supplemental retirement account vendors to NIU.

The vendors will discuss opportunities for retirement benefits with participating faculty and staff members.

“These vendors have been approved by the Board of Regents to offer supplemental retirement accounts to NIU employees to maximize their retirement income potential,” Romano said.

The six participating vendors include Lincoln National Life Insurance Co., Aetna, Twentieth Century Investors, Valic, Fidelity Investments Institutional Services and TIAA/CREF.

“We feel these are safe, secure companies which will offer mutual funds,” she said.

“This is a non-obligatory approach in getting faculty and staff to discuss their retirement plans.”

The expo also could benefit NIU’s civil service staff, she said.

But, Romano said employee participation is strictly voluntary.
