The NIU women’s soccer club recorded ts first victory of the young season with a 2-0 triumph over Eastern Illinois University on Saturday at the Huskie Soccer Practice Field.
A nice show of people were on hand to watch the Huskies shut out their opponent and improve their record to 1-0-1.
Junior Vicki Thompson got the Huskies on the board after a scoreless first half. Thompson’s goal came seven minutes into the second half.
Senior Cristy Liall then put the game out of reach for the Panthers with a goal of her own with 13 minutes left in the game.
A good defense coupled with great team play resulted in the Huskie win.
Coach John Lechner was very pleased with his team’s performance. “I think right now the girls are playing very well,” he said. “We have a lot of potential to grow and do a lot more things with the team.”
The Huskies’ next game will be on the road next Saturday against the University of Iowa. The Huskies will then return for a home game versus DePaul University on Sunday.
“We’ve got a really good team and I am very pleased with the turnout of the team,” Lechner said. “We have a lot of girls, which helps.”
