While the Mid-Continent Conference Men’s Tennis Championship is actually scheduled for May 24-25 in DeKalb, today and tomorrow could be billed as the Mini-Mid-Con for the NIU team.
The Huskies, 8-14 after Tuesday’s 6-3 loss to Marquette, host the University of Illinois-Chicago today at 3 p.m. at the West Campus Courts. Saturday, NIU welcomes the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay at 9 a.m. and then comes a 2 p.m. showdown with Western Illinois University.
“Obviously, these are three key league opponents for us, so it’s a big weekend just because of that,” NIU coach Chuck Merzbacher said. “But when you take into account the effect for seeding toward next weekend, that makes this weekend even more important. We’re also at home and we want to preserve a winning record at the ‘kennel.'”
Matt Green boasts the squad’s best win total having accumulated a 19-15 standard, predominantly at the No. 4 singles slot.
While, Andy Schoeberlein is coming off two impressive performances against the Warriors. In singles play, Schoeberlein prevailed 6-4, 6-0 and teamed up with Dustin Dobrin in doubles for a 6-3, 6-2 triumph.
UIC began the week with a 6-7 overall dual mark while the UW-GB enters the week at 5-14. Western boasts an outstanding 17-1 overall ledger and is fresh from a 5-4 Mid-Con triumph over the Flames. WIU and UW-GB also meet in DeKalb on Friday.
