DeKALB Insomnia Cookies will be having their grand opening downtown, 203 E. Lincoln Highway, on Saturday from noon to 1 a.m., with a pajama party at 8 p.m.

Insomnia Cookies is a chain known for staying open late to deliver cookies and other treats to customers. The stores are usually found near college campuses.

“We open up a lot of stores in towns on or near college campuses, so NIU is definitely our target,” said Matthew Winfield, a new store operations team member at Insomnia Cookies.

There will be an Insomnia Cookies Grand Opening PJ Party starting at 8 p.m. Customers that wear PJs will be able to get one free six-pack of classic cookies with any purchase. There will also be a Milk Pong Shot Challenge as well as some giveaways, according to a Facebook post by the company.

“I went to Parkland Community College in Champaign and they had one in Champaign on the U of I’s campus so I absolutely loved it,” said Anna Wilson, membership manager at the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce. “We’d go there after the bars or when we were studying we’d go get Insomnia Cookies, so to have something that’s open late and to have cookies like that is pretty awesome.”

The DeKalb location has been open since Monday as the location is having its soft opening leading up to the grand opening. The current hours of operation are 11 a.m. to midnight Monday through Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Thursday, noon to 1 a.m. Saturday and noon to midnight Sunday, Winfield said.

“I believe our normal hours of operation will be the same as the soft opening at this time and that could be subject to change,” Winfield said. “We could stay open later on, but as of now it will be the same hours.”

The grand opening will not only allow customers to purchase items from Insomnia Cookies, as there will also be opportunities for customers to receive free cookies when they visit Saturday.

“All day (Saturday) customers can receive one classic cookie in store no purchase necessary,” Winfield said. “When I say classic cookie, there’s a difference between a classic and a deluxe. The deluxe are the jumbo size cookies, but it’ll be one classic cookie. We’ve got 13 flavors of classic cookies.”

Classic cookies are $2 each while the deluxe cookies are $3.50 each, according to the Insomnia Cookies website.

“They stay open late so it would be possibly a nice study break or if somebody’s leaving work late and wants to soothe their sweet tooth then that would be a nice thing to do,” said Bill Nicklas, DeKalb city manager.

In addition to cookies, the store also sells ice cream sandwiches, cookie cakes, ice cream, icing and milk, according to the Insomnia Cookies website.

“From what I’ve heard everyone’s very excited, it’s great to see different places invest here locally and have someone like Insomnia Cookies want to come into our community is really exciting,” Wilson said.
