Use condoms

I have only been here one whole semester and since I’ve been here, I have witnessed very sexually active males and females around the dormitories. Many of them may or may not be using condoms while sexually active. A recent article of “NewsWeek” dated Dec. 9, 1991 states that there are 12 million case of sexually transmitted diseases each year, according to the Center for Disease Control.

I understand many of you who don’t use condoms have your reasons, but HIV is out there and is gradually increasing. There are many STD’s going around from person to person which are also on the uprise. They are: syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, pelvic inflammatory, genital herpes, genital warts and hepatitis B. The pregnancy rate is also multiplying among teens and young adults. We should all try to prevent this situation from increasing any more by emphasizing the use of condoms.

People who are sexually active should keep condoms with them no matter where they go. For those with cars, why not keep them in your glove compartment? Then, also make sure that there are condoms in your room for those late night dates.

For those who might have a negative attitude about a condom, you should try to see the other side of the issue. Don’t think that you can receive more satisfaction from sexual intercourse by not using a condom. You can receive the same satisfaction from sexual intercourse and be safe at the same time. For those of you who tend to flatter yourself by saying, “A condom is too small,” think again—a whole hand can fit inside of a condom.

Another thing for those of you who think it takes away from the whole lovemaking experience by ruining the moment, make putting on a condom a part of foreplay. It might be fun, and besides, there are all types of condoms to choose from. The different kinds of condoms are lubricated, non-lubricated, ribbed, extra-strength and even novelty brands. Just choose one to fit your expectations.

For some, condoms are a way of life; for others, it may require some getting used to. If we are going to be sexually active, we should all practice safe sex. It doesn’t matter whether you are male or female. You should both be aware of the importance of condoms. It is not just the man’s responsibility anymore.
