DeKALB — As NIU welcomes its new and returning students, changes to the parking permit system are making an appearance as well. The Campus Parking Committee has now introduced a virtual parking system that provides a quick and easy way to register your vehicle.

How it works

To acquire a parking permit, members of the Campus Parking Committee stated that students must register their vehicle online through the NIU Parking Portal. When registering, students are allowed to have up to two vehicles under their name. The license plate used to register will act as the pass itself as the License Plate Recognition system allows officers to scan and verify virtual permits. When parking, it is mandatory that the license plate is facing outward so that it may be validated. Failure to do so may result in a parking ticket that would be the responsibility of the owner.

Students who reside on campus may park their vehicle in the orange designated parking lots and commuting students may park in the yellow lots. Blue parking lots are reserved for staff.
