NIU Athletics to host pair of Homecoming events
DeKALB – NIU’s 115th homecoming weekend will take place from Oct. 7 to Oct. 9. It will involve two events that are now open to the public: the NIU Athletics Hall of Fame Induction and the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Title IX at a brunch.
The Huskies’ 35th NIU Athletics Hall of Fame Induction will take place on Friday. At this event, NIU will induct 13 new members into the NIU athletics Hall of Fame during the ceremony that will take place at the Duke Ellington Ballroom in the Holmes Student Center. The event is free and all are invited. The reception will be at 5 p.m. and the program will start at 6 p.m.
The inductees for this year include seven former NIU student-athletes: Amy Foulke, Thomas Hammock, Chandler Harnish, Kristin Hoffman, Sandra Lutz, Scott Simon and Chad Spann.
Then on Sunday, NIU will welcome back its female student-athletes from throughout the history of NIU, along with current members of the women’s teams to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX. Title IX was put in place to prohibit sex discrimination in the education programs and activities of entities that receive federal finance assistance. It will involve a brunch and program at 10 a.m. in the NIU Convocation Center.
The event will include a panel discussion that will have many of the greats from the Title IX era including Hall of Fame inductee Kristin Hoffman, former NIU softball coach Donna Martin and some of the current women’s head coaches at NIU.
