NIU athlete faces charges

An NIU football player who was charged in 1990 with two counts of aggravated battery was found not guilty Jan. 8 on one of the charges, but must return to court to face the other charge.

Former lineman Thomas Osteen was involved in a Nov. 20, 1990, fight near Amnesia night club, 1000 W. Lincoln Hwy. NIU student Joseph Marconi suffered a broken nose, concussion and two black eyes in the incident.

Osteen will go back to court March 23 for the final pre-trial hearing for the first count of aggravated battery. A jury trial has been scheduled for April 6.

Two other NIU football players, cornerback Richard Favor and former halfback Brett Schroeder, pleaded guilty to charges of battery and were sentenced to 12 months probation.
