The academic year is coming to a close and it’s once again time to gather up your dirty laundry, throw one last round of bags and say goodbye to your one-night stands. Just because the school year is over doesn't mean that DeKalb is shutting down. The...

The Mountain Goats: The Sunset Tree

By Kelly Johnson | May 4, 2005

Dealing with pain and tragedy through music can be a therapeutic and cleansing experience. However, an artist must realize the tricks of the trade. Do not sound self-indulgent. Do not sound cliché. These attributes will alienate the listener. John Darnielle...

Enjoy the life you’ve made for yourself

By Mark Bieganski | May 4, 2005

I’ve been told many times that in the time it takes to blink an eye, life just might end up passing you by. If ever there was a moment when that cliché could be proven true, it would be now. With the car packed to the brim, my ride slowly began four...

Shallow Thoughts

By Greg Feltes | May 3, 2005

Editor’s Note: Shallow Thoughts is exactly what it sounds like. Every day, the Star will feature musings and rants about anything and everything. You are invited to send your own anonymous shallow thoughts to [email protected]. The best will run in this very space. The worst will be discarded as if they were one of those stupid flyers passed out in the MLK Commons.

First shallow thought from a reader and it, of course, bashes me:Cody Pickett? Yeah, one of the best QBs the Pac-10 has ever seen. Not to mention a rookie in the NFL playing in one of his first games. Someone should know what they are talking about before opening their mouth. One more thing, [P.J.] Fleck would have never had to make such acrobatic catches while playing at NIU if the balls thrown to him were actually on target and not 30 feet over his head in typical Josh Haldi fashion.

The new turnaround sucks. That’s not particularly funny or insightful, but it’s true. I don’t think this is what students meant when they demanded more grass on campus.

Wouldn’t it be weird if the first cure for cancer caused an even worse disease?

Of this I swear: Pizza tastes better at 9:45 p.m. when you have waited 12 hours to order your pie, so you can save a lousy couple of bucks.

Re: Yesterday’s photo poll. Yes, that was an Obama sticker I was wearing and yes, I don’t have a forehead.

People I hate, entry No. 76: jerks.

I want to have Jennie Finch’s babies.

Well that may be, but at least I never slept with Lumbergh.

The Finger

By Rachel Gorr | May 2, 2005

Every Tuesday and Thursday, a Sweeps staffer will point the finger at something on his or her mind.

McDonald’s is not off the hook yet for allegedly causing obesity in dumb people.

On Tuesday, a federal appeals court reversed a lower court decision to dismiss a suit by some McDonald's customers, which alleged that McDonald’s used "deceptive" advertising to "trick" them into eating food that is unhealthy for them.

I agree. Those commercials showing two greasy quarter-pound hamburger patties covered in condiments, a large soft drink, and deep-fried french fries clearly give the appearance of what a healthy meal should look like.

This is why, although I am not overweight, I have decided to file a suit against the American Dairy Association.

When I was young, I was told that if I drank milk daily, I would get big and strong. I currently stand 5'7" and 130 pounds.

Everyone who finds themselves in my same situation should join me to fight the deception. Thanks to these litigants for giving me the courage to go ahead with my lawsuit.
