BOT approves tuition increase

By DAN STONE | June 29, 2009

Proposals, both for tuition and student fee hikes, were passed unanimously Tuesday at the full NIU Board of Trustees meeting.

With most of the discussion on the increases already completed at committee meetings two weeks ago, the board spent little time in passing the recommendations in President John Peters' report.

An undergraduate student taking the normal load of 15 hours will pay $142.50 more in tuition in 2001-02, along with $88.90 more in student fees. The increases go along with a room and board rate that will remain unchanged.

The board's approval also enacts plans next year to eliminate Dining Dollars and encourage the use of Huskie Bucks at convenience stores and local restaurants. Also, weekly allotments for cafeteria purchases will be lowered to $50 a week at the base rate.

Tuition increases will help cover Illinois Board of Higher Education requirements, pay for more smart classrooms and help train faculty on new technologies.

In other board approvals:

— The board approved paying $1.1 million to re-turf Huskie Stadium this summer. The old turf will be replaced by grass-like turf.

— The board approved creating a master's of science degree in sport management, creating a minor in communicative disorders and eliminating the master's of science degree in finance.

— The board approved all faculty and staff recommendations for tenure and sabbatical leave.

The meeting also featured Dave Nelson, the new chair of the NIU Foundation, speaking before board members. Nelson said he's trying to formulate a strategic plan for the money-raising organization. This plan includes developing a new magazine to send to alumni, replacing the Northern Now, and developing a presence in Chicago.
