Campus construction continues

By Collin Quick | July 26, 2005

The renovation of Altgeld Hall and the construction of Barsema Hall continue making progress.

Construction has begun on Altgeld to install links (glass walkways) to the third floor conservatory towers, said Patricia Perkins, assistant to the senior vice president of NIU Finance and Facilities.

"The links are a real milestone for us," Perkins said. "We are hoping they will be complete next month."

Without the addition of the walkways, it would be necessary to use the second floor to access the third floor in each tower.

Perkins suggested looking toward the east, central and west towers to see progress on the construction of the links.

"People can finally see what's going on," Perkins said.

Most of the exterior improvements and interior demolition is complete, according to the campus construction Web site maintained by the NIU Office of Public Affairs.

Altgeld Hall has been under renovation since fall 1999. The project has exceeded its original budget by $5 million. There still is no specific date for completion.

"We are making good progress," Perkins said.

The construction of Barsema Hall, which broke ground in spring 2001, is on schedule, according to the campus construction Web site.

The foundation and entire steel frame are complete. Steel for the auditorium is on site and ready to be erected.

The emphasis for the project is on completing the masonry to enclose the roof before winter so interior work can be done, Perkins said.

For continuing updates of these and other construction projects around campus, go to www.niu.edu/pubaffairs/improve or access the link from the NIU homepage.

The site covers 19 different construction projects, said Jennice O'Brien, communication manager for electronic media in the NIU Office of Public Affairs.

"We just wanted to show the campus what's going on," O'Brien said.

Once on the site, a choice is given to see either a map of west campus improvements or of east campus improvements. Choosing one will bring up a map of that side of campus with numbered areas for each construction project.

Choosing a project will bring up a box listing details on the cost of the project, what construction has been completed and what construction is in progress.

The site will continue to be updated every month or two in order to leave enough time between updates for the status of the construction to change, O'Brien said.
