Huskies look for first MAC win

By Mark Pickrel | September 30, 2002

Trying to snap a two-match losing streak, the Huskies will try to win their first conference match of the year.

NIU will play Central Michigan (3-9) Saturday at 7 p.m. at Victor E. Court. The Chippewas will be in MAC play for the first time this season.

CMU is led by Emily Lovejoy, who leads the Chippewas with 173 kills, which averages 3.68 kills a game.

The Chippewas’ setter, Shaleene Glombowski, averages 11.24 assists per game.

The Huskies, who own a 6-2 record at Victor E. Court, will try to get their first conference win at home. They will be on the road for their next three matches.

"Winning any game at home is important," senior setter Jenny Rohren said. "You never want to lose at home; you have your friends there, your classmates. Winning is very important."

NIU is led by a trio of outside hitters and a middle blocker. Tenisha Wilkins (2.79), Tera Lobdell (3.31) and Jen VonderHaar (3.23) all average close to three kills a game.

After blowing three leads while losing to Ball State, the Huskies will look to finish teams off.

"We need to keep our focus," Rohren said. "There is a point where we lose our focus every match. After losing to Ball State, winning is going to help our confidence."

Rohren thinks there is not one team that will run away with the MAC title, but she likes the chances NIU has.

"I expect us to do well," she said. "[Winning against CMU] will help our confidence and will help us against the rest of the MAC."

When asked about the importance of winning his first MAC conference game, Gooden said the importance is in other areas.

"Not so much for me, but it is more important for our team to win," said Gooden. "They need to play well, that is what is important."
