By Michelle Harris | April 26, 1990

NIU student health insurance is still a good deal, according to local agents' quotes for similar coverage. Although NIU's group student health insurance is slated to increase 80 percent, from $78.40 to about $140 per semester, it will still cost less...

Four rank in top percent

SPOTLIGHT

April 26, 1990

Name: James (Jamie) Pennington

Birthdate: August 5, 1967.

Birthplace: Rockford, IL. I was raised in Stillman Valley - 15 miles south of Rockford.

Current position: Sixth ward alderman for DeKalb.

Year(s) in current position: One.

Education: Senior at NIU. Major in political science with an emphasis in public service.

Car driven: Blue-grey 1987 Dodge 600 with "no vanity plates."

Favorite food: Almost any kind of char-broiled food.

Favorite TV show: The Flintstones.

Favorite movie: "It's a Wonderful Life."

Favorite music: Jazz, classical and Christian rock.

Favorite book: The Bible.

Favorite vacation spot: The Natusha Grasslands - a prairie preserve owned by Nature Conservancy. I try to get there every other week. It's 30 miles west of here.

Most likely to be found: Probably working somewhere - right now I'm delivering pizzas - or with my friends.

Hobbies: Politics, to a certain extent, birdwatching and nature walking.

Ideal way to send an evening: Since I have very few evenings where I can do absolutely nothing, that's what I'll do. No meetings, no work.

Favorite childhood memory: Just being a child - not having to worry about anything. You always had your food in front of you and you didn't have to worry about what grownups worried about.

What I like the most about my job: I like being in a position where I can try and help people and try to make a difference.

What I like the least about my job: I'm only one vote out of seven (as an alderman) and it takes a majority of votes to get things done. The Council doesn't always see things the way I do.

Most memorable NIU experience: Probably when I got elected (as alderman).

Role model: Jesus Christ.

Worst advice I was ever given: Not to care, not to overextend myself. I've been told to give more time to academics and less to what's going on.

Behind my back people say: It depends on which people you're talking about - some good and some bad. Just like anyone else.

By Lynn Priola | April 26, 1990
