Daley’s camera law will hurt, not help workers

The Police frontman Sting once sang he'd watch every move you made. And though the dark song about an obsessive lover has little relevance to Chicago industries, segueing to information about the Chicago police potentially having to enforce business owners...

Driving age should stay at 16

February 6, 2006

In a country with more than 2.95 million people milling about, we're bound to bump into each other at some point. Sometimes the effects are loud and a bit too devastating, but raising the state's driving age from 16 to 18 is still an idea borne of bureaucracy...

our voice

January 27, 2006

In a sense, DeKalb is a miniature Chicago.

We have our entertainment venues and local bands, our happening bars filled with able-bodied college students every night, our restaurants and eateries and even our own myths and tales to entertain out-of-towners.

But with the recently proposed smoking ban looming over the city, do we really want to go the way of Chicago and put a ban on smoking in bars and restaurants’

The Northern Star thinks so. Not only will the ban clean up the air in certain indoor public areas, but it will bring more people out and, in turn, support local businesses.

While some people don't mind the smoke, others can't stand it and will move as far away from the offending odor as possible. Some won't even go to public places because of it. But these people deserve a social life as well, right’

Then again, we can't forget about people who can't drink without a cigarette in their other hand. Will a ban on smoking keep them at home and away from their favorite hotspots’

An ordinance will come before the DeKalb City Council Feb. 13 with local business owners and concerned citizens hashing out their thoughts on the subject at hand.

A complete ban would prohibit smoking indoors in public areas, but private clubs would be exempt from the potential law. Some local business owners suggested including an exemption for bars.

So when it comes down to it, will a little smoke deter students and citizens from going out and supporting local establishments’

A 1999 study found that nonsmokers exposed to environmental smoke were 25 percent more likely to have coronary heart diseases compared to nonsmokers not exposed to smoke.

Already, we have college students working in bars which allow smoking anywhere and restaurants which have designated smoking and non-smoking sections. Just walking into one of these establishments is a health risk, let alone pulling an eight-hour shift in one.

Hopefully, in a couple weeks, the maitre d' at your favorite restaurant will no longer ask, "And will that be smoking or non-smoking’"

Society has come a long way from relying on a duel to defend family honor. Gone are the days of a quick glove to the face and clash between opponents; one out to avenge a wronged kin, the other to solidify seniority. Today issues are settled rarely by...

Fear: The new weight-loss tactic

January 24, 2006

As most of us struggle to lose our holiday weight, Chicagoans have been grappling with a way to shed the city’s unwanted title as fattest in the nation. City officials would do well to look to the United Kingdom as an example. The British Heart Foundation...
