Committee reply

May 1, 1991

The Freshman English Committee is puzzled by the recent stories in The Northern Star concerning the use of non-sexist guidelines in the Freshman English Program. This committee is charged with the responsibility for setting policy in English 103, 104...

Is this some kind of joke or something?

By Eric Dietz | May 1, 1991

Editor's note: Eric Dietz has never written a column and Beth Behland has never drawn a cartoon, so for the last newspaper of the semester, they decided to switch. There's a cover-up going on in this great nation of ours, an information cover-up. We're...

Useless rules

May 1, 1991

The English Department's chairman, J.I. Miller, is a most agreeable person with whom to have disagreement—a real gentleman. He's someone I've known for a number of years and have come to regard with some great esteem. That doesn't mean he's not a formidable...

La Tourette taking on tough opponent

By Greg Rivara | April 30, 1991

It seems students aren't the only ones stressing out as finals approach. President John La Tourette must be feeling a little tired and ornery, too. He blasted student Regent Jim Mertes for a report given to the Student Association and then took some shots...

Support Collins

April 30, 1991

As graduating seniors, we want to thank all of our great fans both on and off campus. We clearly had a superb group of supporters that is second to none in the country. We have often been told that the best things in life are often free, just making the...

Expand horizon

April 30, 1991

The Unity in Diversity Steering Committee would like to extend an invitation to the entire campus to follow the directions of Unity in Diversity 1991's theme: Stand Up, Come Out, Join In. The year is far from over, and the committee challenges everyone...

Homophobia?

April 30, 1991

I would like to make it perfectly clear to David Huggins of the GLU that not one person on campus is "afraid" of homosexuals. You can hide behind that excuse all you want; it's not going to work. In your letter, you also mentioned homophobia. Where? I...

Manual helps give clues

April 30, 1991

University Council student member Steve Cohen should be commended for his attempt to give new student members a clue as to what's going on in the council. Cohen suggested a training manual for new student members to help retain those members for more...

Wrong attitude

April 30, 1991

This is in response to Lou Cory's letter to the editor on "Jeans Day," regarding that topic.

Mr. Cory, I am saddened by your narrow-mindedness! It is people like you who promote discrimination. That is one thing this campus definitely needs LESS of.

You ask "Why does the GLU have to combine human rights with gay rights?" Mr. Cory, I ask you: aren't gay people "human?" And why should sexual preference take away or diminish one's basic human rights? I see no logical connection. Similarly, why should you "choose" to be in favor of human rights, yet oppose support of gay rights?

An intelligent person could not logically answer this question. I suspect that only homophobics would make such a separation. I know that I would not want to be demeaned as a human being because I am heterosexual.

Therefore, I feel strongly that it is my duty to accord those with other sexual preferences the same. If you don't want to that IS your choice, but it is a choice to support discrimination.

There is a difference between ignorance and discrimination. You are ignorant when you don't know the facts, but you are discriminatory when you know the facts and choose to ignore them.

You, Mr. Cory, obviously DID know the facts (as did the majority of NIU students about "Jeans Day"—the event was VERY well publicized) and made the CHOICE to discriminate.

Why should I be surprised—by you, or the numerous other NIU students who choose to reveal their discriminating attitudes on Jeans Day?

Look at the example the NIU administration is setting by allowing ROTC to violate our constitution on campus with their discriminating ways. With that kind of precedent, it should not shock me—NIU obviously is a university that invites and promotes discrimination!

Groups need resident use

April 30, 1991

DeKalb residents should take advantage of the newly-formed focus groups. Some residents and city alderman have pulled together to form groups that will help residents bring their concerns about their wards to the aldermen. And although residents should...

Chicago teams

April 30, 1991

This letter is in response to Jim Tubridy's column of April 16 regarding the quality of Chicago's baseball teams. Jim states that it "is rather distressing to see people care more about baseball than the more important issues in the world." This, Jim,...

Students shouldn’t forget voting rights

By Jim Tubridy | April 29, 1991

Well kids, it's the last Tuesday column from yours truly. Don't worry, though, you won't have to put up with some sappy "goodbye, it's been fun" column. This will be a "wake up and smell the coffee, NIU students" column. Before you all take off for the...
