Knight’s trek to SA ends in a surprise

March 21, 1991

Bill Schwingel Once upon a time there was a self-proclaimed knight from a foreign land who came to a kingdom called NIU and decided to face off with another member of the land to become king. He was armed with only a lance, which had "political clout"...

Women, men need safer jobs not restrictions

March 21, 1991

Ellen Goodman The Boston Globe Johnson Controls didn't have a mommy track. What they had was something different. It was a Maybe, Could-be, Might-Someday-Be-A-Mommy track. The company had a policy that assumed every fertile woman was a pregnancy waiting...

Trivial reprimand

March 21, 1991

Mr. Reynolds, I appreciate the consideration of your reply and your agreement with me that a message in the program would have been more appropriate. We also agree that "you might have to wait" if late to a performance, and that such policies spare both...

Team class act

March 18, 1991

One thing sticks out in my mind as I recall the exciting rivalry that has kicked into high gear this basketball season between NIU and UW-Green Bay (men's and women's teams). And it's not the fact that our guys were able to get the "W" on national television...

Toss out apathy, use ISA

March 18, 1991

Since the students have decided to support the Illinois Student Association with its $22,000, students should now make sure they get their money's worth. There has been some controversy surrounding the ISA recently, mixed with a lot of apathy as well....

Writer to blame

March 18, 1991

I am writing in response to the March 7 letter by Michael McVey, post-graduate or graduate student, or whatever else he chooses to declare himself as in affiliation to the meteorology department. A few things must be clarified. First of all, I have been...

Keep NIU clean

March 18, 1991

NIU has many qualities that helped me choose this college over all of the others. One thing that I cannot tolerate, however, is the lack of responsibility so many students at NIU possess.

The over-abundance of garbage that litters the campus is outrageous and unnecessary.

I am shocked at the amount of trash surrounding the buildings and the broken alcohol bottles and aluminum cans in the parking lots.

There is no excuse for throwing trash on the ground. Take an extra second and throw the garbage in a trash receptacle.

One would think with all the hype about our environment and keeping it clean, we as adults would be more responsible and more environmentally aware.

We owe it to the earth, each other and ourselves to keep our surroundings clean and free from pollutants.

We are the future and if we let our environment slip through our fingers, then we won't have much of a future left.

Grow up, act your age, and clean up after yourselves.

Policy hurts NIU

March 18, 1991

Recently you published letters by professors Sjostrom and Karlson on this subject. There are two issues of particular interest: (a) what have the profits of the major oil companies been doing lately, and (b) are there drawbacks to a policy emphasis on...

It was just a joke

March 18, 1991

Professor Sjostrom: Amazingly, I agree with you—you really, really don't get it. Your rationale for demeaning yourself by referring to a colleague as "spending her time making up excuses to hate the United States" escapes me. Tsk, tsk, shame on you....

Missing candidates twist SA nightmare

By Beth Behland | March 18, 1991

After four years at NIU, one starts to get tired of this whole Student Association garbage and wonder why the group even exists—other than being a supposed resume garnish for some young lawyer hopefuls or to provide some radical college idealists with...

American pride from Gulf cut short in L.A.

By William Raspberry | March 18, 1991

The Washington Post In the most poignant moment of his recent address to Congress on the war in the Gulf, President Bush described the scene we had seen on television: four Iraqi soldiers emerging from their bunker, "broken, tears streaming from their...

Thanks for blood

March 18, 1991

We want to extend our thanks to the thousands of Chicago-area men and women who have so generously rolled up their sleeves as volunteer blood donors the past two months. In the last year, the blood needs of all Chicago area residents have been met without...
