MAC bowl games need some changes

By STEVE NITZ | October 13, 2008

Looking at the schedule for the upcoming college bowl games, there are a couple of things that don't make sense. First of all, two bowl games that have MAC tie-ins, games that NIU could possibly be involved in, are played on Jan. 3 and Jan. 6, respectively....

Volleyball fans outperformed by visiting Toldeo’s fans

By JERRY BURNES | October 12, 2008

Saturday's volleyball game provided a good size crowd, but that was about it. There was a nice mix of NIU and Toledo fans at the game. The problem was that the Toledo crowd was more vocal at the game. Most of the Huskies fans were pretty subdued. One...

By STEVE NITZ | October 9, 2008

Home sweet home. The phrase means something for the NIU football team, as they will play their second home game Saturday against Miami (Ohio) after playing four out of five games on the road. "It's a great feeling," said NIU head coach Jerry Kill, referring...

By STEVE NITZ | October 7, 2008

Of the 105 players on the NIU football roster, 63 of them are from Illinois. Their hometowns range from Chicago to Rockford to Sycamore. Pretty much every NIU football player lives within two hours of NIU's campus. However, one of NIU's freshman is rare...

By STEVE NITZ | October 7, 2008

P.J. Fleck is in his second season as NIU's wide receivers coach and first season as recruiting coordinator. Fleck played at NIU as a wide receiver from 1999-2003 and played briefly with the San Francisco 49ers after leaving DeKalb. He also spent a season...

Simple suggestions to make Huskie Stadium more student-friendly

By BEN GROSS | October 6, 2008

In 2006, former NIU athletic director Jim Phillips asked me why NIU struggled to fill Huskie Stadium. My answer was simple - it's TV. I guess it's a bit more complicated, as what I really was saying was if it's wet or cold or I'm lazy, why would I leave...

A booming request for thunder sticks

By ANDREA BRADLEY | October 6, 2008

Now that the "Family Day" football game is over, I want to ask NIU to do me a favor. It's not a large request. It's not a greedy request. Instead, it is a request based on school spirit and loyalty to the Huskies. My favor - bring back the thunder sticks....

Huskies face tough test in Tennessee Saturday

By BEN GROSS | October 2, 2008

For the first time since 2003, NIU will face a team in the South Eastern Conference. The last time the Huskies played a SEC team, they pulled a 19-16 victory over No. 21 Alabama. NIU (2-2 overall, 1-1 MAC) will get its chance to upset another SEC team...

Each year NIU athletic teams add new players to their rosters. The incoming athletes come from various places and have different backgrounds. From the way they got started in sports, to their many inspirations, these athletes must gel with a new team...

By STEVE NITZ | September 29, 2008

How many football players dream about playing at an NFL stadium and gaining 170 yards with two touchdown catches in their first college game? That's exactly what happened for Nathan Palmer, a redshirt freshman wide receiver, in NIU's opening game against...

Tuesday Commentary: College football’s wacky weekend

By CHRIS DERTZ | September 29, 2008

My father imparted a lot of wisdom upon me as I grew up. One thing that stuck with me was his confidence in the complete randomness of sports. "There are no givens in sports," he'd say. "None except for this: On any given day, any given team can beat...
