Football News and Notes

By BRANDON MANGIA | October 9, 2007

Both running back Montell Clanton and middle linebacker Tim McCarthy went for MRIs on Monday afternoon.

NIU head coach Joe Novak said at Monday's MAC teleconference that preliminary reports put Clanton with a torn right ACL.

"It doesn't look good," the 12-year coach said. "I'm 95 percent sure Montell is out for the year."

Novak expects sophomore tailback Justin Anderson to start, with true freshman Chad Spann as a back up. The coach also said that redshirt sophomore David Bryant and redshirt freshman Ricky Crider may play a role.

Preliminary reports for McCarthy say the captain has torn his PCL.

"It could be anywhere from several weeks ‘til the season," Novak said of the length the middle linebacker might miss. "His [injury] doesn't look good either."

Kicking to history

With a second quarter PAT, place kicker Chris Nendick continued to make Huskie history.

The senior has scored in 39 consecutive games which is a NIU best. The old record was 24 consecutive games, by former place kicker John Ivanic.

Nendick has scored 10 points this season on two field goals and four PAT.

Turning a new page on turnovers

In two games this season the Huskies have turned the ball over eight times, and have only recovered one turnover.

Against Southern Illinois this past weekend NIU fumbled twice and threw three interceptions.

"The thing really bugging us is turnovers," Novak said. "You can't do that against anybody and have success. Right now that's killing us."

Last season, in 13 games the Huskies finished with a plus-two turnover margin.

Similar starts

For the last three seasons, NIU has started 0-2.

In 2005 the Huskies lost their first two games to Michigan and Northwestern. Then in 2006, NIU lost the season opener against Ohio State, and home opener against Ohio.

Both of those seasons saw NIU reach an extra game at the end of their season.

In 2005 the Huskies played at the MAC Championship and in 2006 NIU went to the San Diego Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.

Huskies football has become cupcake batter

By BEN GROSS | October 8, 2007

The last time I checked, the Castle Drive entrance said "Northern Illinois University" â€" not "Cupcake U." Where's Cupcake U. located, you ask? Well, it actually doesn't exit. But during the two years I've covered Huskie football, NIU coach Joe Novak...

By BRANDON MANGIA | October 3, 2007

Quarterback No doubt, Temple has been the doormat of the college football world for the past few years. This year, the Owls have only two seniors on their roster and are 0-5. However, one reason the future looks brighter for Temple is its redshirt junior...

Forget football, fall is for the Cubs this year

By BRANDON MANGIA | October 1, 2007

Thank you, Chicago Cubs. It always seems that as long as one of your favorite teams is doing well, it's enough to divert your attention from the others that aren't living up to personal expectations. Forget the quarterback controversy hovering over the...

There's three seconds left on the clock at Huskie Stadium. The NIU football team is down by a point and quarterback Dan Nicholson just completed a pass to wide receiver Matt Simon. The stage is set for a game-winning 44-yard field goal. Huskie head coach...

Football falls to CMU despite offensive boom

By BRANDON MANGIA | September 30, 2007

When a team racks up 521 yards of total offense, it's usually enough to get the win. It wasn't enough for the NIU football team Saturday at Central Michigan. Despite the offensive onslaught, the Huskies scored only three points on five trips to the red...

Covering the game and being productive, too

By BEN GROSS | September 30, 2007

I like to usher in my weekends like millions of other Americans have since 1981. Yes, that amazing year that Loverboy released "Working for the Weekend." But a football road game usually means at least five hours of driving, covering the game, the press...

Since Notre Dame released former quarterback Demetrius Jones from his scholarship, Jones has been able to talk to any football coach he pleases. This includes NIU head coach Joe Novak. In his Tuesday press conference, Novak said Jones is not currently...

Central Michigan defensive breakdown

By BRANDON MANGIA | September 26, 2007

Defensive line A defense that gives up 43 points per game is nothing to brag about. Central Michigan University came into the season picked to finish second in the MAC West but is 1-3 and ranked in ESPN's bottom 10, thanks to a defense that gives up 509...

Head coach Joe Novak knew the Huskies needed to make big plays in order to beat Idaho over the weekend. That's exactly what he got and then some. Not only was junior defensive end Larry English named MAC Defensive Player of the Week, but English was also...
