Northern Star’s Top 10 Athletes

By Andrew Hansen | April 30, 2007

Quarterbacks, beware. Larry English is hungry.

The junior-to-be defensive end had to sit out all spring practices and the Spring Game due to a knee injury suffered in the Poinsettia Bowl. The knee required surgery, so English had to rehab instead of doing drills.

But that's where the hunger comes from.

"It definitely was hard," English said. "I wasn't making plays or getting better."

English said it was nice seeing other defensive ends like Robert Oruche and Brandon Bice make plays, but as an All-MAC performer, would certainly prefer to be out there.

"I can't wait for camp to begin," English said. "Camp was the one thing I used to dread, but not anymore. I want to start where I left off."

In the beginning of the season, the Aurora native set a goal to get double-digit sacks. He accomplished that goal with a scary ease. And at the end of the season, English tied the school record and was second in the MAC with 12 sacks, including a school-record 4.5 sacks against Temple.

But the stats don't stop there. English had 51 tackles, tops for NIU defensive lineman, a team-leading 16 tackles for a loss, four forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

The season hasn't started yet, but English has already been named to the Rotary Lombardi Award watch list. The award is given to the best defensive lineman in college football.

As for a goal for this season?

"I haven't figured that out yet," English said. "But I'll let you know when I do."

Whatever the goal ends up being, it won't be good for quarterbacks.

Celebrating the best celebrations

By James Nokes | April 23, 2007

Instead of the NIU script letters across his chest, a giant "S" would have done just fine. It may have just been Marcus McCarty soaring into the stands after an overtime goal to beat Wisconsin 1-0 on Oct. 22, but it sure as heck looked like Superman....

Biggest Spring game question

By Sean Connor | April 19, 2007

DeKALB | To pose the biggest question NIU's football team must answer before next season would only be asking the obvious. So, rather than worry about who will fill the black hole left by the nation's leading rusher in Garrett Wolfe, Coach Joe Novak and...
