Huskies hit the road

By Colin Decair | March 4, 2005

With spirits running high, the NIU baseball team hits the road this weekend to play a pair of games against Buffalo.

The trip to Buffalo is just the beginning of an eight-game, 12-day road trip. Senior Mark Skrukrud will take the hill in the first game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, looking to give NIU its eighth-straight victory over the Bulls. The second game of the trip will take place at 12 p.m. on Sunday.

"We got a long road trip, 10 hours on a bus, so we just got to come out strong," NIU coach Ed Mathey said. "We're just going to have to limit our mistakes and go out there and be aggressive on the bases, and those are things I think we can do."

The Huskies (15-9, 3-1 MAC) have been coming together as of late, winning 11 of their last 13 games.

During this stretch, the Huskies have scored double-digit runs six times and are coming off a big victory against in-state rival UIC.

"Being able to hit the ball so well lately gives our pitchers a little lee-way, because they don't have to be so perfect," first baseman Mike Hochhauser said. "They've been kind of carrying us all year and the fact that we've been swinging the bat well really takes the pressure off them and maybe it will help them perform better."

With 12 of their next 17 games on the road, the Huskies will need a happy club-house if they hope to have a winning season.

"Everybody on this team feels like brothers," Hochhauser said. "When you're on the road, you usually got a bunch of fans heckling you and making fun of you, but as long as your guys are there laughing with you, it's a lot easier to overcome everything."
