Women rout WSU; men win too

By Todd McMahon | February 17, 1992

The NIU women's basketball team simply stole the fun from Wright State in record-breaking fashion Saturday. The Huskies (13-9, 7-2 in the North Star Conference) turned the Raiders in every possible direction while registering a school-record 37 steals...

By Wess Swietek | February 14, 1992

It's round two this weekend for the Valparaiso Crusaders, the Illinois-Chicago Flames and the NIU men's basketball team. First up for NIU is a rematch against the Crusaders. But the Huskies won't be facing the same Crusaders squad when they square off...

Tired Huskies squad rests for homestretch

By Wes Swietek | February 13, 1992

Coming down the homestretch, the NIU men's basketball team is a group of tired Huskies. With good reason. Head coach Brian Hammel's squad has been down to nine bodies, some healthier than others, this semester. The Huskies have managed to build a 9-13,...

Win over Western not just another ballgame

By Wes Swietek | February 12, 1992

Monday's 82-77 win by the NIU men's basketball team over Western Illinois at times resembled open gym night at the YMCA. Between 37 combined turnovers, some unconscious shooting performances and abysmal refereeing, there was an out-of-bounds play that...

Hammel’s 100th win not pretty

By Wes Swietek | February 11, 1992

Head NIU men's basketball coach Brian Hammel would just as soon forget his 100th career win. "There'll be no calls from the Hall of Fame for (tapes of Monday's game) for their archives," Hammel said. Artistic merits aside, the Huskies triumphed 82-77...

Molis responds with 27

By Roger Moreano | February 11, 1992

Brian Molis made the most of his opportunity to make amends for his poor 1-for-16 shooting performance on Saturday with a 9-for-16 effort Monday night against Western Illinois. Molis led the NIU men's basketball team to an 82-77 win over WIU by pouring...

Bennett shows NBA touch in win

By Wes Swietek | February 10, 1992

Several NBA scouts, along with 5,497 fans, were in attendance at Saturday's NIU men's basketball game against Wisconsin-Green Bay. The scouts, at least, were not disappointed with what they saw. The Huskie fans who helped swell the largest Chick Evans...

NIU to host ‘struggling’ Phoenix

By Wes Swietek | February 7, 1992

Will the NIU men's basketball team face a "struggling" squad when it meets 17-2 Wisconsin-Green Bay Saturday? According to Green Bay coach Dick Bennett, that's exactly what awaits the Huskies in the 7 p.m. match at Chick Evans Field House. Struggling?...

Rivals meet as Phoenix invade

By Wes Swietek | February 6, 1992

It's a young rivalry, but the Wisconsin-Green Bay—NIU men's basketball games are as intensely anticipated as the more storied battles between more familiar foes. It started last season when the Huskies under Jim Molinari enjoyed a spectacular 25-6,...

Oldendorf emerges as big force

By Wes Swietek | February 5, 1992

How quickly things change. For example, at the start of the NIU men's basketball season, Steve Oldendorf was expected by many to continue the role of bench warmer. Twenty games into the season, he has become a key member of the Huskies. His emergence...

Same start, different end

By Roger Moreano | February 4, 1992

What a difference a game and 20 minutes can make.

The NIU men's basketball team licked its wounds from a tough loss on Saturday and came out aggressively Monday night to post an impressive 75-56 victory over the Akron Zips.

Only 48 hours had passed since NIU had suffered a shocking 71-55 loss at the hands of Cleveland State.

In what could have been termed "A Tale of Two Halves," NIU had blown a 15-point halftime lead en route to being outscored by 31 points in the second half by Cleveland State.

On Monday, NIU raced to another big halftime lead only to see it dwindle to five with 15:35 to play in the contest.

However, unlike Saturday's second half disappearance, NIU responded to Akron's run with 10-straight points to put the game away.

At halftime, NIU head coach Brian Hammel did not feel he needed to remind his ballclub of Saturday's game.

"We never want to influence our players with a negative thought," said Hammel. "We talked about how to play with a lead and that they (Akron) would come out more aggressive in the second half.

"We told our guys that it's time to get stronger and not weaker. You've got to fight fire with fire and pressure with pressure."

The pressure did come, and NIU responded this time around. Senior forward Brian Molis led the way for NIU with 20 points, but gave the entire team credit for playing 40 strong minutes.

"We could've easily folded, but everyone concentrated and played the second half hard," said Molis. "When (Akron) made a run at us, we withstood the run.

"We had to concentrate ... we didn't want to make the same mistake twice. This was a good win for us."

Deja Vu as Huskies down Zips

By Wes Swietek | February 4, 1992

It seemed like old times at Chick Evans Field House last night. The Huskie's men's basketball team was battling Mid-Continent Conference foe Akron, assistant coach DeWayne Kelly was on the bench and the NIU defense was holding the Zips to their nickname—as...
