Huskies rely on ‘Dog Pound’

By John Dietz | January 23, 1992

The Huskies men and women's basketball teams are getting an extra boost this year from a growing group of fans known as the "Dog Pound." They are easily recognized as the group of fans dressed in red T-shirts behind the opponent's backboard, razzing refs...

Hammel searching for solution-oriented troop

By Wes Swietek | January 22, 1992

Despite the fact that the NIU men's basketball team was facing two of the better Mid-Continent Conference teams this weekend and earned a split, head Huskies coach Brian Hammel isn't satisfied. "I'm greedy, I want to win them all," Hammel said. "(The...

Raiders spoil Huskies’ weekend

By Wes Swietek | January 21, 1992

Spectators at this weekend's men's basketball games saw examples of torrid and ice-cold shooting, both turned in by the Huskies. In Monday night's 84-70 loss to Wright State, NIU shot a bone-chilling 17 percent in the first half. Just 48 hours earlier,...

By Steve Dennis | January 16, 1992

Senior Associate Athletic Director Cary Groth has designed a committee to define the use of $10,000 for an athletic training fund referred to as "nutritional supplements." At the December meeting of the Athletic Board yesterday, all of an NCAA broad-based...

Women zap Zips, while men fall

By David Lance | January 14, 1992

Early in Monday night's game with NIU, Akron's women's basketball team played much unlike the 2-13 team that it is. Shooting lights out, Akron maintained an eight-point lead with 13 minutes left in the first half. Then, Akron wilted and the Huskies took...

NIU feeling the heat heading into UW-GB

By Wes Swietek | January 13, 1992

It's a clear case of going from the frying pan into the fire.

The NIU men's basketball team hasn't exactly sizzled with a 4-8 season record going into the snake pit that is Wisconsin- Green Bay's home gym tonight.

The Huskies do stand at 2-1 in Mid-Continent Conference action as they take on the arch-rival Phoenix at 7:30.

NIU head coach Brian Hammel knew, though, that this wouldn't be the easiest of seasons as the Huskies returned only two seniors.

"I try not to get consumed by the wins and losses," Hammel said. "I knew it would be a building process. We're trying to keep our focus on improving one game at a time and getting the program headed in the right direction."

Since the semester break, NIU lost at DePaul (90-77) and at Idaho State (97-92), had a three-game home stand with a win against Chicago State (106-100), a loss to Xavier (84-74) and a win over Valparaiso (77-66).

The Huskies then hit the road for three straight, losing to Akron (82-69), beating Cleveland State (82-77) and losing (83-65) at Southern Illinois.

"Right now, we're playing average. Some nights we're an A-plus and sometimes a D-minus," Hammel said. "We need to do two things: cut down on our turnovers ... and we need to do a better job on our opponents' shooting percentage."

And the 11-1 Phoenix (2-0 in Mid-Continent action) should

rovide NIU with one of its stiffest challenges of the year.

"I think De Paul was good and Southern was real good ... (Green Bay) is very, very good," Hammel said.

The Phoenix handed NIU three of its six losses last season and are led by Huskie-killer Tony Bennett.

"Bennett is a tremendous player—he has the total package," Hammel said. "We'll have to know where he is on the court at all times.

"They're an experienced ball club, with some good underclassmen ... they deserve to be a Top-25 team."

Huskies lose six now, but gain five for future

By Wes Swietek | January 13, 1992

Then there were nine. The NIU men's basketball team is losing players so fast that head coach Brian Hammel, who was drafted by the NBA and CBA, might be tempted to suit up himself. Going into the second half of the season, the Huskies are down to nine...

Loss to Musketeers not hard to swallow

By Wes Swietek | December 6, 1991

In sports, there are losses that are like uncooked spaghetti—hard to swallow. Then there are losses that are like strawberry ice cream—they go down a lot easier. The one suffered by the NIU men's basketball team Wednesday at Xavier fit into the latter...

Layton, NIU fall 3-pointer shy

By Wes Swietek | December 5, 1991

NIU guard Mark Layton had a perfect chance to cap his career-best game. But in the end, the difference between Xavier's and NIU's men's basketball teams Wednesday night proved to be the difference between made and missed free throws. Layton missed a chance...

O’Dell’s side job linked to Raycom

By Wes Swietek | December 5, 1991

NIU Athletic Director Gerald O'Dell was at the University of South Florida in Tampa this week, apparently working as a consultant for an organization with ties to a firm that has done work for NIU. South Florida has established a task force to look into...

Xavier gives NIU reason to worry

By Wes Swietek | December 4, 1991

For those unfamiliar with college basketball, the NIU men's teams' next opponent—Xavier—may not be a well-known name. College hoops fans know, however, that the Musketeers are one of the top teams in the Midwest. Xavier has made six-straight NCAA...

NCAA overlooks NIU; Huskies still in Top 52

By Steve Dennis | December 2, 1991

To no surprise, the NIU volleyball team did not get an NCAA Tournament bid when the 32-team field was announced last night. The 25-7 Huskies had an outside shot at the NCAA's, but weren't counting on a bid this year. "There was an extreme outside chance,"...
