Same start, different end

By Roger Moreano | February 4, 1992

What a difference a game and 20 minutes can make.

The NIU men's basketball team licked its wounds from a tough loss on Saturday and came out aggressively Monday night to post an impressive 75-56 victory over the Akron Zips.

Only 48 hours had passed since NIU had suffered a shocking 71-55 loss at the hands of Cleveland State.

In what could have been termed "A Tale of Two Halves," NIU had blown a 15-point halftime lead en route to being outscored by 31 points in the second half by Cleveland State.

On Monday, NIU raced to another big halftime lead only to see it dwindle to five with 15:35 to play in the contest.

However, unlike Saturday's second half disappearance, NIU responded to Akron's run with 10-straight points to put the game away.

At halftime, NIU head coach Brian Hammel did not feel he needed to remind his ballclub of Saturday's game.

"We never want to influence our players with a negative thought," said Hammel. "We talked about how to play with a lead and that they (Akron) would come out more aggressive in the second half.

"We told our guys that it's time to get stronger and not weaker. You've got to fight fire with fire and pressure with pressure."

The pressure did come, and NIU responded this time around. Senior forward Brian Molis led the way for NIU with 20 points, but gave the entire team credit for playing 40 strong minutes.

"We could've easily folded, but everyone concentrated and played the second half hard," said Molis. "When (Akron) made a run at us, we withstood the run.

"We had to concentrate ... we didn't want to make the same mistake twice. This was a good win for us."

Vikings win in tale of two halves

By Wes Swietek | February 3, 1992

What's the old saying about not counting your chickens before they're hatched? For the answer, ask anyone who attended Saturday's NIU men's basketball game. With a 35-20 lead at halftime, the Huskies were apparently headed for a relatively easy win against...

Young Huskies build on adversity

By Wes Swietek | January 31, 1992

What was supposed to be the NIU men's basketball team's rebuilding year is turning into a solid foundation for the future. After another impressive win for the shorthanded Huskies Wednesday night at Loyola (62-56), NIU stands at 7-11, 4-4 going into Saturday's...

Lady Phoenix’ stock on the rise

By David Lance | January 31, 1992

The atrocities of the Packers notwithstanding, there is joy in the Green Bay sports world. Last season, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men's basketball team, led by current senior/All-America candidate Tony Bennett, capped off a 20-win regular...

Huskies dig deep to down Loyola

By Todd McMahon | January 30, 1992

For 40 minutes Wednesday night, the NIU men's basketball team played like a squad with a full deck. Down to only eight players before the opening tip, the Huskies (7-11) dug deep and played inspired basketball in a 62-56 upset victory over Loyola-Chicago...

Depleted Huskies stun Eastern

By Wes Swietek | January 28, 1992

With the NIU men's basketball team down to nine players, three of them walk-ons, any victory is bound to be a team effort. And that was certainly the case last night in Charleston as the depleted Huskies stunned Eastern Illinois 76-67 in a Mid-Continent...

WIU drops NIU despite Oldendorf’s career-day

By Wes Swietek | January 27, 1992

The NIU men's basketball team had some big shoes to fill with the absence of leading scorer Brian Molis Saturday at Western Illinois. Seven-one sophomore center Steve Oldendorf stepped in with a career performance. But it wasn't enough as the Mid-Continent...

Huskies rely on ‘Dog Pound’

By John Dietz | January 23, 1992

The Huskies men and women's basketball teams are getting an extra boost this year from a growing group of fans known as the "Dog Pound." They are easily recognized as the group of fans dressed in red T-shirts behind the opponent's backboard, razzing refs...

Hammel searching for solution-oriented troop

By Wes Swietek | January 22, 1992

Despite the fact that the NIU men's basketball team was facing two of the better Mid-Continent Conference teams this weekend and earned a split, head Huskies coach Brian Hammel isn't satisfied. "I'm greedy, I want to win them all," Hammel said. "(The...

Raiders spoil Huskies’ weekend

By Wes Swietek | January 21, 1992

Spectators at this weekend's men's basketball games saw examples of torrid and ice-cold shooting, both turned in by the Huskies. In Monday night's 84-70 loss to Wright State, NIU shot a bone-chilling 17 percent in the first half. Just 48 hours earlier,...

Women zap Zips, while men fall

By David Lance | January 14, 1992

Early in Monday night's game with NIU, Akron's women's basketball team played much unlike the 2-13 team that it is. Shooting lights out, Akron maintained an eight-point lead with 13 minutes left in the first half. Then, Akron wilted and the Huskies took...
