NIU to face Bronco test

By Tom Clegg | January 25, 1988

Losing streaks are never any fun and NIU's men's basketball team is struggling through a particularly nasty one—make that two. The Huskies have lost five straight overall and four in a row to the Western Michigan Broncos. NIU will try to end both skids...

Huskies lure enemies to their den

By Jeff Kirik | January 22, 1988

Jim Rosborough thinks Chick Evans Field House could cure the NIU basketball team's four-game losing skid Saturday. On the other hand, he could think of easier teams to break the streak against. Hot off a 55-point win Wednesday night, the Akron Zips invade...

Rocket barrage stops NIU

By Tom Clegg | January 21, 1988

Well, nobody got hurt. Otherwise, not much good can be said of the NIU men's basketball team's 96-72 loss at Toledo Wednesday night. Just ask assistant coach Jon Mackey. "Tonight is the worst we've played all year," Mackey said. "No doubt about it." The...

Truth a double-standard to NIU athletics?

By Dave Tuley | January 21, 1988

Time flies. An athlete transfers to another university. Witnesses graduate or drop out ... It now appears Iowa officials will not seek to extradite John Culbertson on his warrant for allegedly shooting into an occupied car while he was at Iowa State in...

Rosborough takes troops to Toledo as skid persists

By Tom Clegg | January 20, 1988

Jim Rosborough wants a victory and he wants one now. The second-year NIU men's basketball coach wants to see an end to the Huskies' current three-game losing streak when NIU travels to Toledo Wednesday at 7 p.m. "The losing nicks at you," Rosborough said....

Men’s b-ball savors few bright spots

By Tom Clegg | January 19, 1988

It looked more like a rugby scrum than a victory celebration and senior co-captain Rodney Davis was on the bottom of the pile. Davis' 25-foot buzzer-beater at Drake Jan. 2 gave NIU men's basketball team its first road win since Jim Rosborough took over...

Whiteside ineligible

January 19, 1988

NIU freshman point guard Donald Whiteside has been declared academically ineligible for the upcoming spring semester, men's basketball coach Jim Rosborough announced Monday. "Donald is a great young man. This is a prime example of the difficult task that...

NIU not to run versus Braves

By Jeff Kirik | December 11, 1987

Jim Rosborough usually considers his NIU men's basketball squad a running team. Not this weekend. Sunday at 4:05 p.m., the 1-3 Huskies will be at the Rockford MetroCentre to face a Bradley team which is averaging 102.5 points through two games. Rosborough...

Women cagers to play in Vegas in ‘88

By Tom Clegg | December 10, 1987

The NIU women's basketball team will spend some time in Las Vegas next December. Thanks to a shaky approval of the 1988-89 schedule by the NIU Athletic Board Wednesday, Coach Jane Albright and her squad will play Dec. 9-10 in the Nevada-Las Vegas Classic....

NIU sports notebook

December 10, 1987

NIU kicker John Ivanic is within leg's reach of setting a number of Huskie football records. The redshirt freshman is four consecutive extra points away from breaking Rick Osbourne's 1966 NIU mark. He is also five field goals away from breaking Vince Scott's 1983 record of 18, and 22 points away from overcoming Scott's 80-point mark set the same year.

Huskie halfback Rodney Taylor is approaching some NIU records of his own in the punt return department. The junior, who is 12th in the nation with 13.1 yards per return, is 16 returns and 24 yards away from Huskie career marks. He currently has 53 career returns for 470 yards.

NIU's rushing offense ranks ninth in the nation with 276.1 yards per game. The team is also 31st in total offense with 390.6 ypg and 27th in scoring with 27.6 points per game.

Fullback Tim Peshek has had 144 carries during his two-year NIU career and he has not lost yardage on any of his attempts. With this season's 456 yards, he has moved his career yard total to 652.

In men's basketball, forward Andrew Wells is still not practicing because of a sprained ankle. Coach Jim Rosborough said Wells should be ready by the team's Nov. 19 date with the New Zealand National team.

Rosborough's staff compiles a daily chart of each player's performance in practice and then ranks the players to show each one's progression since practices started. Not surprisingly,, senior guard Rodney Davis was at the top of the list through Tuesday's practice. He was followed—in order—by Brett Andricks, Donnell Thomas, Randy Norman and Jo Jo Jackson.

The men's and women's basketball teams will hold a joint open scrimmage Saturday, Nov. 21. The teams will alternate playing periods so the fans can see each in action. The day will also feature an autograph session.

The men's team's open practice which was scheduled for Nov. 23 apparently will not be held because there is a Run DMC concert in Chick Evans Field House that night.

A pair of walk-ons made NIU's basketball teams this year. Women's coach Jane Albright is keeping guard Denise Lipnisky and Jim Rosborough has made room for guard Dave Pygon.

Sellers, Pygon explain reasons for leaving team

By Chris Sigley | December 9, 1987

What do you get when you solve the equations basketball plus money and basketball plus academics? In the case of former NIU men's basketball players Tom Sellers and Dave Pygon, the answer is to quit the area that takes up more time. It was announced Monday...

Two NIU basketball players quit squad

December 8, 1987

Sophmore foreward Tom Sellers and freshman walk-on Dave Pygon quit the men's basketball Monday citing academic reasons, according to NIU basketball coach Jim Rosborough.

"Tom has decided to pursue academic and other interests," Rosborough was quoted as saying during an NIU Sports Information release yesterday. "Both will remain at NIU to complete their degrees. Tom has been a good team member. He's a very bright person and has a good future in whatever carreer he pursues."

Sellers, 6-foot-8, 200-pounds, was red-shirted during the 1985-86 season and played in 14 games as a freshman in 1986-87. He average 1.5 points and 1.8 rebounds per game last season.

Sellers established carreer highs of 6 points and seven rebounds last season in NIU's win over Rollin's College. He also missed 11 games with a fractured jaw. He had seen action in two of the team's four games this season and did not score.

Sellers played his high school basketball at Downers Grove South and was recruited by former NIU coach Jim McDougal.

Pygon, a 5-foot-11, 166-pound guard, attended St. Rita High School last season. He appeared only in NIU's opener against Beloit College, which the Huskies won 79-51.

"Dave simply felt that he did not have the time to compete academically and spend the time on the basketball floor," Rosborough said. "I'm totally supportive of that concern."

Neither of the players could be reached for comment.

The loss of the two players drops Rosborough's roster to 13 players.
