Huskie netmen drop to vengeful Badgers

By Chris Sigley | October 4, 1987

The NIU men's tennis team came back from Madison, Wis., with more than they expected—a loss. The Huskies, now 5-1, walked into Nielson Tennis Stadium Saturday having beat UW twice last year, 7-2, 7-4, but left the courts with an 8-1 defeat in the Badgers'...

Huskies defeat EIU in long, rough weekend

By Chris Sigley | September 28, 1987

Despite the back injuries, the pulled muscles and the overall dreariness of a two-day tournament, the NIU men's tennis team managed a 5-1 dual meet victory over Eastern Illinois Saturday in Normal, Ill. "We didn't play our best, but we won," said Carl...

Brigham takes stock of stormy athletic year

By Jim Wozniak | April 28, 1987

After facing Hurricanes on the athletic field, NIU men's athletics also had to battle unchartered waters on its new athletic ship. NIU had its baptism in independent waters this year after leaving its 13-year affiliation with the Mid-American Conference,...

Huskies dominate Gullikson Courts

By Jim Wozniak | April 19, 1987

Tennis buffs will recall a period about eight years ago when a one-man machine named Bjorn Borg breezed through major tournaments with virtual ease. Saturday at Gullikson Tennis Courts, the NIU men's tennis team resembled such a wrecking crew. The Huskies...

Doubles help NIU pull away from Valparaiso

By Kari Brackett | April 16, 1987

NIU men's tennis coach Carl Neufeld depended on many of his reserve players at Thursday's match against Valparaiso, and they proved themselves worthy as NIU won 6-3. "We got a chance to play four (players) who normally do not start," Neufeld said. "Like...

Tennis teams come from behind with doubles play

By Kari Brackett | April 12, 1987

The NIU men's and women's tennis teams did not et weather hamper play this weekend as both teams came away with victories. The men had three straight victories, bringing their record to 22-10, winning Friday and Saturday's St. Ambrose College Quadrangular,...

On the road again

On the road again

April 9, 1987

The NIU women's volleyball team, heading into its last weekend of conference play on the road until the last weekend of the season, has rebounded after losing its first two road conference games.

"We've accomplished what we wanted to in the fact that we've dug ourselves out of a hole," said coach Todd Kress.

The Huskies (8-4 overall, 5-2 in the Mid-American Conference) have sent a message to the rest of the MAC the past two weeks by winning five in a row, three of which have been away from Chick Evans Field House.

This weekend NIU will travel by bus to Ohio and West Virginia, to battle conference foes Ohio and Marshall.

Last season Ohio defeated the Huskies at home, but NIU retaliated in the MAC tournament by scoring a 4-game match win. NIU defeated Marshall in its only meeting, a year ago, in three games.

For the weekend, balance, defense and blocking will be the focus for the Huskies. As always Kress stresses these to his players.

NIU has been extremely balanced, and that has helped them excel, said senior Carrie Blankenship, who credited her recent MAC player of the week award to the play of her teammates.

The players, as well as Kress, want to win both matches this weekend and come back to the fieldhouse for nine of the next 10 in good standing within the conference.

"We knew when looking at the schedule that seven of nine on the road would be very tough to start," said Kress. "I think we've put ourselves in a good position if we can finish the work that we've started and get these two this weekend."

Netmen sweep foes despite fighting wind

By Jeff Kirik | April 5, 1987

Being a hospitable host is not one of the NIU men's tennis team's strong points. The Huskie netmen won three dual meets over the weekend as they hit their home courts for the first time in the spring season. NIU opened the weekend by beating Illinois-Chicago...

Netmen begin home season with three matches

By Jeff Kirik | April 3, 1987

Already 26 dual meets into its season, the NIU men's tennis team is set to play where it has not played all year—home. The Huskies will play three teams this weekend at the Gullickson Tennis Courts by Anderson Hall. NIU, 16-10, will open Saturday at...

Good weekend for tennis squads

March 30, 1987

NIU's men's tennis team defeated Wisconsin for the second time this season, and the women's team captured two wins Saturday after a setback Friday. The men netters grabbed a 4-2 lead after singles play, which is somewhat surprising, on their way to a...

Netmen fall to Michigan

March 23, 1987

The University of Michigan is not only the home of a football powerhouse. The NIU men's tennis team came out on the short end of a 9-0 score Friday as the powerful Michigan Wolverines swept NIU in both singles and doubles play. Michigan, which upped its...
