Ezell leaves for eligibility

By Frank Rusnak | September 4, 2002

It is a reunion of sorts, but this get together won’t be finished at the end of the night. Former NIU basketball assistant coach Ryan Marks has opened the doors at Southern Vermont College to former Huskie Sean Ezell. Ezell, who would be a rising senior...

Cross Country improves chemistry for 2002 season

By Sean Connor | September 3, 2002

Almost every athletic team comes into the season with a goal. For the NIU Cross Country team, it’s "success is one team, one goal." Every step, road and track brings this team one step closer to success," said coach Shantel Twiggs. In her third year...

Huskies’ win no surprise

By Frank Rusnak | September 3, 2002

ntertaining, yes. Surprising, no. NIU’s come-from-behind victory over Wake Forest was enough to beat the Deacs, but far from impressive. While everyone - outside of DeKalb - considered Wake a favorite by at least a touchdown, was it wrong to think NIU...

Out with the old, in with the new

By Chris Jurmann | September 3, 2002

Following the first weekend of athletics in the Convocation Center, freshman undeclared major Melissa Monk summed up the Victor E. Court the best. "It’s really nice," she said. No, this wasn’t the unbridled enthusiasm one would hope to find after...

Huskies leave Las Vegas winless

By Sean Connor | September 2, 2002

The NIU men’s soccer team journeyed to Las Vegas, Nev., this past weekend. Unfortunately, the Huskies came up one goal short in their first game against the University of New Mexico and faltered the next day as well against UNLV.

UNM scored the first goal of the game at the 29:17 mark, which was the lone goal scored of the first half.

NIU charged back in the second half. Freshman Brendon Parrish broke the ice with his first goal of the season 13 seconds into the half. However, that was the only goal the Huskies could muster as UNM scored one more goal to claim the victory. UNM also outshot the Huskies 15-4.

"Our biggest problem today, our whole team wasn’t sharp," NIU coach Willy Roy said. "We weren’t hustling like we should, and not making plays. The heat might have had something to do with it, but that’s no excuse because it was just as hot for (UNM). This match should be a wake-up call for our guys, because nobody will give them anything. We need to open our eyes and be sharper."

Thomas Meiner responded to Roy’s call against UNLV when he stole a pass and knocked in the first goal of the game, and his first collegiate goal, at the 16:05 mark.

Once again NIU’s play dropped as the game continued. UNLV went on to score the last two goals of the half, and add two more in the second half in a 4-1 victory.

"Our biggest problem defensively is that Peter Agrimson is doing a lot of work at sweeper, and everybody is watching him," Roy said. "There were several individual breakdowns which we need to eliminate. But Thomas Meiner scored a nice goal, and he’s really on track to help us. He had one taken away (on an offside call) Friday night, but he’s working hard for us."

NIU was outshot by a vast margin once again and only managed four shots on goal for the second game in a row. NIU is now 0-2-0 on the season.

"We played extremely well for most of the first half, but then the heat got to us," Roy said. "We made three really bad mistakes in the back, and they took advantage of them."

Good things come to those who wait. And wait. And wait. The NIU football team learned this Thursday night as it beat Wake Forest 42-41 in front of 19,653 fans at Huskie Stadium. The Huskies trailed the length of the game before kicker Steve Azar nailed...

Down for the count

September 2, 2002

NIU had more than its share of bumps and bruises in the season opener against Wake Forest. Junior safety Lionel Hickenbottom went down with a torn ACL on only the fourth defensive play of the season. Hickenbottom, a member of the highly touted NIU secondary,...

Eastern Illinois tops NIU at invite

By Chris Jurmann | September 2, 2002

Balance and depth are key for winning team sports, especially cross country. Unfortunately for the Huskies, Eastern Illinois had too much depth to overcome as it defeated NIU 23-36 to capture the Huskie Invitational. Despite not producing the first place...

Volleyball finishes 2nd

By Adam Zolmierski | September 2, 2002

A 2nd place finish in the Best Western Invitational isn’t what the host Huskies would’ve liked, but the weekend tournament seemed to help NIU coach Ray Gooden determine where his volleyball team stands. The Huskies lost to Indiana University in the...

By Marc Marin | August 27, 2002

Mark Orszula wants the NIU campus to know exactly what he’s going through. A few minutes after conducting an interview at Huskie Stadium Tuesday evening, the 6-foot-7, 323-pound Orszula wanted to clarify something. "I’ve had six surgeries, not four,"...
