NIU looks for another magical season

By Adam Zolmierski | November 1, 2001

As I watched the women's basketball team last year, I felt like I was a kid again watching a Disney movie. Everything played right into that magical scenario except for one thing ... the ending. In Disney movies there is always a happy ending where the...

Not your ordinary student

By Frank Rusnak | November 1, 2001

It wasn't your regular summer for your normal college student, but then again, Tamara Bowie isn't your regular college student. A 5-foot-11 forward for Ball State, Bowie was recognized as the top player in the Mid-American Conference last year as a sophomore,...

By Frank Rusnak | October 31, 2001

With NIU leading 29-19 in Game 3, the chants of NIU rattled through Chick Evans Field House Tuesday night, while the players fed off the crowd's energy. "The crowd was incredible," said outside hitter Tenisha Wilkins. "When I was going back there to serve...

Eastern Michigan provides motivation

By Mark Pickrel | October 31, 2001

Saturday's football game with Eastern Michigan provides an interesting storyline for even the most casual football fan. Last season, NIU took a 5-4 record into Ypsilanti to face lowly Eastern Michigan. The result was one of the most embarrassing losses...

Men’s soccer slides past Badgers

By Mark Pickrel | October 30, 2001

Some teams get all the breaks. In Saturday's match against Wisconsin, the NIU men's soccer team was the recipient of a break that decided the match. Thirty minutes into the second half, Rob Berkley sent a harmless lead pass into the Wisconsin zone. The...

Van Wasbeek proves worthy

By Marc Marin | October 30, 2001

Raymond van Wasbeek further validated his selection to the 2000-01 All-Mid-American Conference First-Team this weekend as the NIU men's tennis team competed in the ITA Midwest Region IV Championships.

Van Wasbeek advanced the furthest of any Huskie as he won his first two matches in the singles flight. His run ended after a 6-2, 6-1 to Matt Lockin of the University of Michigan.

"Raymond won the matches he should win and that's good," said coach Steven Rodecap. "It was a bit disappointing that he couldn't go any farther, however. The draw really opened up if he could have made it past that round."

Like the previous year, van Wasbeek and Aaron Forsberg hooked up in doubles and were victorious in a first-round match, this time against a duo from the University of Illinois-Chicago.

They weren't as successful in the second round, as they fell to the second-seeded pair of Mike Costa and Nathan Zeder from the University of Illinois.

"We played pretty well in the first round and took care of them pretty easily," said Forsberg. "In the second round we ran into some tougher competition."

Also victorious for the Huskies was Erick Martinez, who emerged on top after a three-set match against fellow MAC competitor Pete Baghadati. But that was as far as Martinez advanced when he ran into fourth-seed Phil Stoldt of Illinois in the second round and lost 6-1, 6-1.

Juan Pablo Barriga had a short tournament; he suffered a hard-fought 6-7, 4-6 loss to Josh Axler of Northwestern.

"It's nice to get some matches in against upper echelon competition, but we just need to get better to win those battles," said Rodecap. "It did give us a chance to find out what we need to work on in preparing for the spring season in January."

Spring season is more than two months away, and the Huskies won't take the court again until Jan. 19 when they begin a trio of games against the Big Ten as they visit Northwestern.

"Hopefully we can get some good match play under our belts and build up some confidence for the MAC tournament," said Forsberg.

Hockey club loses in end against UM-St. Louis

By Nicholas Alajakis | October 30, 2001

All season long coach Bill Thorn has preached to his team the importance of playing a full 60 minutes . Had the Huskies (2-2-1, 1-1) followed through with his advice, their Friday night loss to the University of Missouri St. Louis (8-0) might have ended...

Blankenship and NIU take on Iowa

By Frank Rusnak | October 30, 2001

Getting a taste of home, Iowa-native Carrie Blankenship welcomes Iowa to the Chick Evans Field House at 7 p.m. tonight. Though she is from Cedar Rapids, don't expect the 5‘ 9" senior to be blowing kisses and handing out hugs for the Hawkeyes (3-16,...

The Sand fleas

By Adam Zolmierski | October 30, 2001

Being in the limelight isn't their specialty ... defense is. Two of perhaps the most important players on the court for the Huskies are rarely noticed by the press, or even by spectators. Despite being overlooked, senior Jen Scarpino and junior Coley...

Women’s soccer loss eliminates playoff hopes

By Juan Marquez | October 30, 2001

As the only remaining member of both NIU's 1997 and 1998 Mid-American Championship teams, Jane Mucci wanted a chance to compete for a third. To do so, the NIU women's soccer team needed to win both of its matches over the weekend to have a chance. Mucci...

Swimming finally beats ISU

By Mark Pickrel | October 30, 2001

In most cases, a win against a non-conference opponent is nothing to get excited about. But when you haven't beaten that opponent since George Bush (Sr.) was president, there is reason to celebrate. The NIU women's swim team's 64-49 win against Illinois...
