Huskies bounce Zips

By James Nokes | April 2, 2006

A dominant second half propelled the NIU women's basketball team to a 75-67 win at Akron Wednesday.

The Huskies overcame a lackluster first half, where they trailed by as many as 11 points, by outscoring Akron 44-28.

NIU picked up its second road win on the season with an overwhelming post presence. A 38-18 advantage on points in the paint, and a 43-27 edge in rebounding pulled NIU (7-10 overall, 3-3 MAC) back to .500 in the MAC.

A three pointer from Keishonda Williamson, who scored a season high 19 points, gave NIU a 61-58 lead it would not relinquish. NIU shot a robust 59 percent from the field in the second half and neutralized the early hot hands of Akron.

Forwards Jessie Crooks and Courtney Stewart, who combined for more than 40 points, got Akron (3-14, 0-6) on a roll in the first half. NIU took control of the game with a 16-4 run, where the defense stifled Akron into 1-of-8 shooting from the field.

"We were a lot more aggressive as a team in the second half," NIU coach Carol Owens said. "We took a lot more pride in our defense. We out rebounded them and got some charges that we needed in order to get some stops."

The NIU lead swelled to 70-61 on a jumper from guard Stephanie Raymond with 2:42 left in the game.

Raymond extended her streak of double-digit games to 24 with 16 points. A balanced NIU scoring effort featured 10 points from sophomore forward Kristin Wiener, eight points from senior forward Jamie Wilson, and seven points from both Nikita Odom and Mary Basic.

"Nikita and Jamie did a real good job helping out when Jen (Uptmor) and Kristin got in a little foul trouble," Owens said. "Stephanie was feeling the pressure to score for us, but what we really need is her leadership. And that's what we got from her in the second half."

With the victory over Akron the Huskies tied last season's win total of seven. The Huskies won four conference games last season.
