Huskies get first victory

By Steve Brown | March 7, 2005

With his team facing a five-game losing streak, NIU pitcher Brian Smith wasn’t about to let his team fall for another sweep.

The right-hander pitched a seven-inning no-hitter in the Huskies’ 9-3 win over Southern Illinois on Sunday.

Smith was helped by the NIU offense’s 16-hit performance, giving the Huskies (1-5) their first win of the season.

SIU (7-5) won the weekend’s first two games 6-3 Friday and 6-5 Saturday. The Huskies lost Saturday’s game in extra innings despite a 14-hit effort.

Saluki catcher Brendan Lutz drove in the winning run with a single in the 10th inning Saturday.

Friday’s game featured an SIU comeback in the seventh inning that spoiled Nick Hall’s six innings of shutout pitching.

The Salukis scored six runs in the inning, helped by three errors that led to the avalanche of SIU scoring.

"I felt like Nick [Hall] pitched well enough to win the game today," head coach Ed Mathey said in a press release following the game. "We had some opportunities to score some runs earlier in the game but didn’t get the key hits that it takes to win a ball game like this."

By Sean Ostruszka | March 4, 2005

To say the NIU baseball team is anxious to get on the field is an understatement. The last time the Huskies got to compete on a diamond was Feb. 13 in Lubbock, Texas. Since then it’s been just practices at the Campus Recreation Center and one home game...
