By ANDY PRUSKI | September 4, 2007

While there is a first time for everything, the NIU volleyball team hopes to avoid that saying tonight when it takes on a DePaul team still looking for its first win of the season. The Huskies (3-4) host the Blue Demons (0-5) as the two rivals square...

Volleyball takes second at Butler invite

By ANDY PRUSKI | September 3, 2007

One of the advantages of the NIU volleyball lineup is that offense can come from anywhere on the court. However, that theory only looked good on paper until the Huskies put it into effect at the Butler Invitational this past weekend. NIU took second in...

Fall in sports: A love story

By James Nokes | August 27, 2007

It happens every fall. I fall in love. As the flood waters retreat, and sweltering heat of summer and the tropical rainforest-like humidity that has invaded the Chicagoland area dissipate, kids will get back to school, leaves will start to turn, and in...

Education began early for the NIU volleyball team, as it went 1-2 this weekend in the NIU Invitational. The Huskies began their campaign against Indiana where NIU held a 2-to-1 game advantage going into the fourth game but was unable to win the match....

Wanted: One MAC title

By Ben Gross | August 26, 2007

A MAC title. That's the goal NIU head volleyball coach Ray Gooden has set this season for his team. "The main expectation is to play at a level where we can compete for the MAC," the sixth-year coach said. Just last year, Gooden and the Huskies won the...

Soccer stellar now and later

By Ben Gross | August 6, 2007

DeKALB | Just because they're freshmen doesn't mean NIU men's soccer coach Steve Simmons new recruiting class won't get a chance to be on the field this season. College Soccer News has ranked NIU's nine new soccer players as the 38th-best recruiting class...

Top 10 athletes

By Andy Pruski | May 2, 2007

As a freshman, Kate McCullagh had the raw ability but lacked the knowledge.

Now a senior, and 1,936 kills later, it's safe to say the knowledge is there.

"I lacked the smarts and [Coach Gooden] just invested so much time in me," McCullagh said. "I didn't realize I had ‘it' till Ray showed me."

What McCullagh had was an attack and jump some players would make a deal with the devil for.

In her senior season, the Woodstock, Ill. native tallied 632 kills for an average of 5.74 per game. The average places her fourth in the nation.

McCullagh's 600-plus kill season was only the third in Huskie history. The middle blocker reached the milestone in 2005 with 690 kills.

Tera Lobdell's 2004 performance of 713 kills still reigns as the most kills in a season by a Huskie, but McCullagh's 1,936 kills crowns her with the career record for kills at NIU.

The record-breaking season didn't go unnoticed.

The Mid-American Conference named McCullagh MAC Player of the Year. The American Volleyball Coaches Association placed her on the All-Mideast Region squad.

But the big fish to reel in was being named an honorable mention on the AVCA's All-American team.

As McCullagh takes in the honors, she comes to a realization. With only four years of eligibility to use, the senior has run out of time.

Going to practice with the team this spring, the middle blocker noticed a new face in the No. 11 jersey - the jersey McCullagh wore for four years.

It caused a bit of a hiccup for the senior. In spring practice, she instinctively went to play on the side of the court for No. 11, only to be reminded she no longer possesses the number.

The same feelings are felt by the senior's coach, as she is part of his first recruiting class at NIU.

"It's tough. Kate was one of the first ones that I coached for four years," Gooden said. "She was part of our first recruiting class. There's a tie there."

With her collegiate career over, McCullagh will move on in life. The senior will finish school next year.

After that, it's unknown. She could be spiking balls in Europe again, or if all goes well, she'll be playing on the sunny beaches around the U.S.

No matter what, McCullagh leaves NIU with the combined ability of raw talent and "smarts."

From Huskie to Bear: Wolfe stays local

By Sean Connor | April 29, 2007

DeKALB | Garrett Wolfe saw it coming from a mile away. We all did. Time and time again, NIU's human water bug has put up with the ‘He's too short, undersized, isn't big enough to play football' sh..., um, stuff. And fans have got to love that SI.com's...
