Huskie Huddle

April 30, 1989

The NIU women's golf squad edged Missouri 617-618 to capture the title at the 28th Annual ISU Redbird Invitational. The weather was the biggest factor, according to coach Pam Tyska. "The rain was just incredible," Tyska said.

Senior Laura Scheibach was top medalist after shooting back-to-back rounds of 74 to finish with 148.

The Huskie men's golf team continued its success at the U. of Northern Iowa Fall Classic, finishing in the top half for the fifth straight year. NIU took sixth place with a total of 1211, 53 behind winner Illinois (1158).

Chad Behrends led the Huskies with a 299, good enough to tie for 12th, 26 strokes behind winner Steve Stricker (273), an All-American from Illinois. Mike Briggs finished five strokes behind Behrends with a 304.

Rounding out the Huskie field was Tek Osborne (307), Rick Stewart (308), and Ted Meyer (322).

The NIU men's tennis team won the Northern Illinois Open held at the Plum Grove Tennis Club in Palatine this past Saturday. They defeated St. Ambrose (3-2), Illinois-Chicago (4-1), and Marquette (5-0).

The highlight of the morning was the come-from-behind victory by Mats Persson over St. Ambrose. In his No. 3 singles match, Persson rallied from a 5-3 deficit in the last match to win the tiebreaker 7-2, and finish with a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 victory.

Sophomore Erik Andersch won all three of his singles appearances, as did all three of the Huskies' doubles teams. Steve Wiere and Tim Halligan defeated St. Ambrose, Dan Bowers and Persson defeated UIC, and Colin Taheny and Persson teamed up to beat Marquette.

Following the NIU football victory over Wisconsin Saturday, linebacker Mike Manson said, "It was no upset. We were the better team. If they had beaten us, that would have been an upset."

Halfback Rod Taylor also is noticing a change in attitude. "The last three years I've been here, every time it's been a close game, we always lost it. I always felt something was against us. Now we've got things going the right way," Taylor said.

The Huskie women's volleyball team defeated Cincinnati (6-15, 15-11, 15-8, 15-5), Missouri (15-11, 14-16, 15-12, 15-4), and Eastern Illinois (15-7, 15-13, 15-13) to win their own Huskie Invitational Saturday, and improve their record to 6-3.

During the Eastern match, setter Beth Glisk had 12 kills in 27 attempts (.444), with no errors. She also led the team with 31 assists.
