Ice-cold shooting kills Huskies

By Chris Sigley | January 21, 1988

Tipping the scales in almost every stat box, the NIU women's basketball team failed to surpass Toledo in the most important statistic—shooting—which forced the Huskies to hand the Rockets a 65-50 decision. A shielded bucket when the clock was running...

Women look to keep their winning feeling

By Chris Sigley | January 20, 1988

The countdown begins. Including tonight's game at Toledo, there are only 14 games left in the ‘87-88 season, and the 6-8 NIU women's basketball team must win them all to accomplish its "win 20 games" goal. "We have to win from here on out," said a determined...

Women’s interim ends with Marquette victory

By Kari Brackett | January 19, 1988

It has been a tough war during the past month for the NIU women's basketball team, which went 4-5 during Christmas break, but the lady cagers won an important battle Monday night against North Star Conference foe Marquette. In defeating the Warriors 88-67...

Women cagers to play in Vegas in ‘88

The NIU women's basketball team will spend some time in Las Vegas next December. Thanks to a shaky approval of the 1988-89 schedule by the NIU Athletic Board Wednesday, Coach Jane Albright and her squad will play Dec. 9-10 in the Nevada-Las Vegas Classic....

NIU sports notebook

December 10, 1987

NIU kicker John Ivanic is within leg's reach of setting a number of Huskie football records. The redshirt freshman is four consecutive extra points away from breaking Rick Osbourne's 1966 NIU mark. He is also five field goals away from breaking Vince Scott's 1983 record of 18, and 22 points away from overcoming Scott's 80-point mark set the same year.

Huskie halfback Rodney Taylor is approaching some NIU records of his own in the punt return department. The junior, who is 12th in the nation with 13.1 yards per return, is 16 returns and 24 yards away from Huskie career marks. He currently has 53 career returns for 470 yards.

NIU's rushing offense ranks ninth in the nation with 276.1 yards per game. The team is also 31st in total offense with 390.6 ypg and 27th in scoring with 27.6 points per game.

Fullback Tim Peshek has had 144 carries during his two-year NIU career and he has not lost yardage on any of his attempts. With this season's 456 yards, he has moved his career yard total to 652.

In men's basketball, forward Andrew Wells is still not practicing because of a sprained ankle. Coach Jim Rosborough said Wells should be ready by the team's Nov. 19 date with the New Zealand National team.

Rosborough's staff compiles a daily chart of each player's performance in practice and then ranks the players to show each one's progression since practices started. Not surprisingly,, senior guard Rodney Davis was at the top of the list through Tuesday's practice. He was followed—in order—by Brett Andricks, Donnell Thomas, Randy Norman and Jo Jo Jackson.

The men's and women's basketball teams will hold a joint open scrimmage Saturday, Nov. 21. The teams will alternate playing periods so the fans can see each in action. The day will also feature an autograph session.

The men's team's open practice which was scheduled for Nov. 23 apparently will not be held because there is a Run DMC concert in Chick Evans Field House that night.

A pair of walk-ons made NIU's basketball teams this year. Women's coach Jane Albright is keeping guard Denise Lipnisky and Jim Rosborough has made room for guard Dave Pygon.

NIU just misses taking Iowa in Fest

By Chris Sigley | December 7, 1987

There is no practice situation that could put NIU's women's basketball team in the position they were in Sunday. With 49 seconds left on the clock of the championship game of the Fifth Annual Fastbreak Fest, the Huskies were down 74-73 to Iowa, the sixth-ranked...

Impressive lineup highlights Fastbreak Fest

By Dan Moran | December 4, 1987

Being that it's early December, it's beginning to look a lot like ... NCAA basketball tournament time. And, according to NIU women's basketball coach Jane Albright, the best women's tourney in the nation will take place right here in DeKalb, this weekend....

Coaches: North Star will survive loss of duo

By Tom Clegg | December 2, 1987

The North Star Conference will survive despite the loss of Notre Dame and Dayton next year. That is the consensus of NIU Women's Athletic Director Susie Pembroke-Jones, volleyball coach Herb Summers and women's basketball coach Jane Albright. While all...

Tough slate challenges women

By Kari Brackett | November 20, 1987

Challenging might be the way to best describe the 1987-88 NIU women's basketball schedule. The Huskies are not just playing mediocre teams to improve last season's 11-16 record. Second-ranked Tennessee, fourth-ranked California-Long Beach and 10th-ranked...
