NIU wins exhibition

By Ian Waddick | November 10, 2003

If only it counted. The NIU women’s basketball team built a 21-point lead early and never looked back in its 81-47 win over the Chicago Challengers - in exhibition play. Nonetheless, Huskies coach Carole Hammerle was pleased with the way the team started...

NIU aims to ‘leave no doubt’

By Ian Waddick | November 6, 2003

During the offseason, NIU women’s basketball coach Carol Hammerle asked her players about their slogan for the upcoming season. The players chose “Leave no doubt.” Every day, the Huskies are reminded of the saying, which is printed on the team’s...

Huskies juggle for playing time

By Steve Brown | September 18, 2003

For at least five NIU women’s soccer players, not meeting summer requirements is forcing them to watch their team from the sidelines. Returners Kelly Kelso, Kerry Walker, Alexis Terry and several others haven’t seen any playing time after the Huskies’...

Sheldon surprises in backup role

Football's Dan Sheldon wasn't even expected to play coming into this season.

But the sophomore from Burlington Central made the most of an injury to P.J. Fleck and excelled in his absence.

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound return specialist led the nation in punt return average at 22.7 per return.

Young gymnastics improved

After winning just seven meets in the last two years, the NIU gymnastics team came in this year with an experienced squad ready to make some noise in the MAC.

Led by MAC Gymnast of the Year Kristina Campos and MAC Freshman of the Year Ashlee Williams, the Huskies did just that. Not only did they go 9-12, they also beat Bowling Green for their first MAC win in 17 meets, finishing with three MAC wins overall.

Knake gets statistical milestone

Kristan Knake didn't end her career the way she wanted to for the women's basketball team.

A string of injuries to the team left the Huskies a disappointing 12-16 overall. Despite closing on a bad note, the senior will leave quite a legacy at NIU.

Knake closed her career as one of only four Huskies with 1,000 points, 300 assists and 200 steals over the course of a career.

Scott best rookie in MAC

Joi Scott entered the season very unassumingly as a quiet freshman. By the time the season was finished, Scott would become NIU women's basketball team's first ever MAC Freshman of the Year.

Scott began the season not even getting off the bench in the team's first game versus Wisconsin. After a number of injuries to NIU's front line, Scott made her presence felt. Scott averaged 3.5 points before MAC play began in early January, then went on to average 12.9 points and 6.2 rebounds in conference action.

Smallwood 1st Team All-MAC

Ball State coach Tim Buckley summed up Marcus Smallwood's First-Team All-MAC performance this year in one sentence. "If you cut him open, I don't think his heart could fit inside the Convo Center."

Smallwood became the first Huskie to be named to the conference first team since T.J. Lux did it in 1999-2000.

Smallwood averaged a double-double for the season with 13.3 points and 10.1 rebounds. He finished the year third in the MAC in rebounds and field goal percentage, with a .548 marker.

NIU hits the road

By Mark Pickrel | February 26, 2003

One last time on the road. The phrase is music to the ears of the NIU women’s basketball team. After compiling a 4-9 record on the road this season, the Huskies (11-13, 7-6 MAC) will make their last road trip of the season when they head to Mount Pleasant...

Showtime at the…Rec

By Frank Rusnak | February 25, 2003

Getting their NIU OneCards swiped, a hoard of scantily-dressed NIU girls in high heels entered the Student Recreation Center on Monday night. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out these individuals weren’t there to break a sweat on the treadmills...

A view from behind the scenes

By Mark Pickrel | February 20, 2003

Long bus rides, altercations with opposing coaches and snoring roommates. Sounds like fun! These are just a few of the sidenotes to playing a basketball game on the road for the NIU women’s basketball team. While athletes and coaches get recognition...

Eagles fly away with win

By Chris Jurmann | February 19, 2003

Slow starts continued to plague the NIU women’s basketball team Tuesday at Eastern Michigan. The Eagles (10-13, 7-5 MAC) jumped out to a 34-17 lead in the first half and never looked back in a 62-43 win. "Honestly, we are just not executing well at...

Huskies hit road to Eastern Michigan

By Chris Jurmann | February 18, 2003

Climbing the stairs onto the bus isn’t nearly as painful as it used to be for the NIU women’s basketball team. After beginning the season 0-8 on the road, the Huskies (11-12, 7-5 MAC) are riding a three-game road winning streak coming into today’s...

Akron models team after Huskies

By Mark Pickrel | February 17, 2003

Despite a loss, Akron women’s basketball coach Kelly Kennedy could not have been happier after Saturday’s game at the Convocation Center. Kennedy was happy with the way her team played against what she called a great NIU team. In her first year, Kennedy...
