Gymnastics

Gymnastics

By Brandon Semel | February 2, 2014

NIU gymnastics head coach Mark Sontag will take a different approach to away meets as the Huskies compete in their first away meet of the season against Bowling Green at 7 p.m. Saturday.

"Almost always we take the day off before a meet, but we are training on Friday," Sontag said.

Sontag hopes the extra practice will help the Huskies (1-3 overall, 1-1 MAC) stay more consistent throughout their lineup against MAC opponent Bowling Green (2-0 overall, 2-0 MAC).

"We haven't hit yet," Sontag said of the Huskies' routine. "But once we start hitting, we'll be fine."

One inconsistency in the Huskies' routine has been the uneven parallel bars. In the Sunday's meet against Central Michigan and Illinois, NIU didn't place a single gymnast in the top three after having two gymnasts place first and second in a Jan. 15 meet.

But Sontag isn't worried.

"In practice, we went through the lineup and everyone hit it twice," Sontag said of the uneven parallel bars routine.

NIU will have to rely on two MAC award nominees to help them beat Bowling Green. Freshman Leah Johnson was nominated for MAC Gymnast of the Week after winning the overall title in Sunday's meet. Sophomore Jennifer Rice also was nominated for Specialist of the Week after tying for the runner-up spot on the balance beam.
