Sycamore | Sycamore will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo this Sunday at Taxco Restaurant, 223 W. State St.

The Sycamore Cinco de Mayo Fiesta, presented by Taxco Restaurant, will be from 2 to 9:30 p.m. behind the restaurant.

Taxco owner Jesus Romero is the founder of the celebration and first started the event in 1997.

“I am in charge of coordinating all the events,” Romero said. “I am the one who paid the bands, the attractions, and oversees the whole fiesta from start to finish.”

The event has no cover charge and all proceeds go to Boy Scouts of America (Kishwaukee district) and the Community Cares Clinic, 3100 Sycamore Road. Romero said the event has grown each year and has raised $80,000 to date.

The event will include authentic Mexican food made by Taxco Restaurant as well as margaritas and beer. There will also be live music and entertainment and a salsa dancing presentation. Specific activities for children, such as face painting and breaking of the piñata, will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. Romero said families are more than welcome with children of all ages.

Romero said he enjoys watching the event and everyone enjoying themselves.

“My favorite part is to see happy people celebrating with us, such as looking at kids breaking piñatas,” Romero said. 

Sharon Emanuelson, marketing and public relations director at Kishwaukee Community Hospital, 1 Kish Hospital Drive, said the hospital has sponsored the Cinco de Mayo festival every year.

“It is a very important community event and we’re particularly happy this year because some of the proceeds are going to the Community Cares Clinic,” Emanuelson said.

Romero said he would like to share the Cinco de Mayo experience with anyone who is willing to attend.

“Cinco de Mayo is about overcoming difficulties and adversity in life no matter the obstacles,” Romero said.
