Brown, an unarmed, black teenager, was killed by Officer Darren Wilson Aug. 9, 2014, in Ferguson, Missouri. Wilson was responding to reports of a convenience store theft and linked Brown to the crime. After an altercation between the two, Brown ran towards Wilson, who responded by firing his gun, hitting Brown at least six times, according to an Aug. 10, 2015, New York Times article.

NIU requests $91 million for FY18

The Board of Trustees carried a motion approving the Fiscal Year 2018 budget request of $91,092,700 which will be prepared and submitted to the Illinois Board of Higher Education for approval in the fall of FY17.

“The real challenge is that this is the level of funding we received in [FY15],” said Alan Phillips, vice president of administration and finance. “Because of the budget impasse in Springfield, we don’t know how much money we’ll receive for [FY18].”
