Volleyball’s win streak highlights this week in Huskie sports

DeKALB – NIU Athletics begins its first week of events in October, highlighted by volleyball’s quest to extend its three-game win streak against Ohio University and Kent State University.

FOOTBALL

Saturday, Oct. 7: at University of Akron, 2:30 p.m.

NIU football (1-4, 0-1 MAC) travels to Ohio Saturday to take on the University of Akron Zips (1-4, 0-1 MAC). Both NIU and Akron are off to slow starts. The Huskies come into Saturday’s contest as losers of four consecutive games, while Akron has lost three straight games. Both teams are in search of their first conference victory.

The NIU volleyball team – winner of its past three matches – hits the road once again after collecting a weekend sweep against Miami University on Friday and Saturday at home. The Huskies take to Athens, Ohio, for a brush with the Bobcats before finishing the weekend at Kent State.

MEN’S GOLF 

Sunday, Oct. 1 – Tuesday, Oct. 3: at University of Wisconsin-Madison

NIU men’s golf heads to Madison, Wisconsin, to compete in the Badger Invitational for the second consecutive year. The Huskies are coming off a tie for sixth place finish at the VCU Shootout after junior Ben Sluzas and graduate student Zach Place finished within the top-10. The tournament is a multi-day event ranging from Oct. 1 through Oct. 3.

Following its previous game being ruled a no-contest due to weather, NIU men’s soccer travels north to Milwaukee to take on Marquette University. The Huskies look to snap their four-game losing skid against the Golden Eagles on Monday. NIU will stay on the road following its bout with Marquette, facing Drake University next in Des Moines, Iowa.

The NIU Women’s soccer team will take on the Eastern Michigan University Eagles at 3 p.m. CT Thursday at Scicluna Field and will face Miami University at 1 p.m. Sunday at home. 

HOCKEY

NIU hockey embarks on its third-straight weekend on the road to open Midwest College Hockey play at Midland. The Huskies dropped all four meetings with the Warriors last season. NIU will look for a strong start of conference action after a rough start to the season. 

WOMEN’S TENNIS

The NIU women’s tennis team will travel to Whitewater, Wisconsin, to play its second tournament of the season.
