Volleyball, football’s high-stakes matchups highlight this week in Huskie sports

DeKALB – NIU Athletics’ weekly events are headlined by volleyball’s matchup with first-place Western Michigan University and football’s quest to extend their two-game winning streak against Eastern Michigan University.

FOOTBALL

Saturday, Oct. 21: vs. Eastern Michigan University, 2:30 p.m.

NIU football (3-4, 2-1 MAC) will take on the Eastern Michigan University Eagles (4-3, 2-1 MAC) Saturday at home. After defeating Ohio University in the Huskies 116th homecoming game, NIU will look to make it three consecutive victories and return to .500 for the first time since Week 2. Both the Huskies and the Eagles come into Saturday’s game riding two-game win streaks, the longest of the season for both teams.

NIU’s volleyball team (8-12, 6-2 MAC) has a pair of short turnarounds in a week rife with road battles in Michigan. After back-to-back home sweeps over Eastern Michigan University on Thursday and Friday, NIU hits the road to take on MAC frontrunner Western Michigan (18-2, 8-0 MAC) on Tuesday in Broncos territory. The Huskies then head to the heart of Michigan’s lower peninsula for a two-match series at Central Michigan (8-13, 2-7 MAC) on Friday and Saturday.

NIU men’s golf is coming off an eighth place finish at the Purdue Fall Invitational, with graduate student Zach Place headlining the lineup. Place’s fourth place finish earned him this week’s MAC Golfer of the Week. The Huskies’ next tournament is the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational, an all day event that tees off on Sunday and ends on Monday. The event is held at the Quail Valley Golf Club in Vero Beach, Florida, and live stats will be available through Golfstat.

After a win at home against Bradley University, NIU men’s soccer is on the road against Western Michigan University at 3 p.m Wednesday. The Huskies then return home to face Belmont University at 1 p.m Saturday at the NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

After a 2-1 victory over Kent State University, the NIU women’s soccer team look to begin a win streak against Ball State University at 1 p.m. Thursday at the NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex. The Huskies will then travel to Mount Pleasant, Michigan, to take on Central Michigan University at noon Sunday at the CMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.  

HOCKEY

After suffering two blowout losses against the University of Jamestown, NIU Hockey travels to Minnesota to take on Waldorf University in search of its first win. Both NIU and Waldorf are yet to find its first victory. This weekend will be the Huskies’ fourth series on the road in the last five weeks. 

WOMEN’S GOLF

Saturday, Oct. 14 – Monday, Oct. 16: at FIU Pat Bradley Invitational

NIU women’s golf travels to Florida International University for its fourth tournament of the 2023-2024 season on Saturday, an all day tournament which runs from Saturday to Monday. Senior Jasmine Ly earned MAC Golfer of the Week for her performance in the Johnie Imes Invitational and looks to continue to lead the Huskies at FIU. 

MEN’S TENNIS

Thursday, Oct. 19 – Monday, Oct. 23: at ITA Regional Championships

Ann Arbor, Michigan / Preston Robert Tisch Tennis Building

NIU men’s tennis travels to University of Michigan for its third tournament of the 2023-2024 season. Senior Mikael Vollbach looks to improve from his two-win performance in the ITA All-American Championships as the rest of NIU’s men’s tennis seeks to bounce back from a winless performance.
