Lady Northern next for Tyska’s golfers

Don’t let the name fool you. The Lady Northern Intercollegiate Golf Championship, which takes place today, Saturday and Sunday, is actually the regional tournament hosted by the University of Illinois.

Many call the Lady Northern the regional championship for the Big Ten conference, as all of its schools are represented. But, the Huskies women’s golf team will also be there. And with them they bring an undefeated, record-breaking season.

With three tournament victories under its belt and totals in last weekend’s Michigan State University Invitational that shattered school records, NIU is prepared to take on the distinguished Big Ten golf teams.

“There has never been a non-Big Ten champion in this tournament,” coach Pam Tyska said. “But with the way we’ve been playing and the scores we’re turning, there is no doubt that we can walk away with the title.”

The Huskies have already beaten eight of the conference teams in previous outings this fall and have yet to face the University of Indiana and the University of Minnesota.

Tyska expects to be challenged by these teams but cites the U. of I. golf course as a definite advantage. Three of the six Huskies have played several junior championships there.

“It’s a tricky and somewhat unfair course and it will be windy,” Tyska said. “But it’s not like we’re going into foreign territory. The girls know this course and have played it well.”
