Baseball returns to DeKalb this week in Huskie sports

After multiple postponed home games, NIU baseball is finally set to make its home debut Wednesday this week in Huskie sports.

BASEBALL

Senior catcher/outfielder Colin Summerhill launched two home runs last week as NIU baseball (10-18, 6-6 MAC) defeated the Northwestern University Wildcats in a stand alone game and won one of three games against the MAC rival University of Toledo Rockets. 

After playing its first 28 games away from home, NIU baseball finally returns to DeKalb for its first home game of the season Wednesday against the University of Illinois Chicago Flames (16-10, 2-4 MVC) before welcoming the MAC-leading Bowling Green State University Falcons (12-10, 9-0 MAC) for a three-game weekend set.

NIU softball (9-20, 3-6 MAC) looks to stay on a winning course after winning its first series of the season against Kent State University (18-10, 4-2 MAC).

Senior infielder Caitlyn Shumaker enters the week as NIU’s all-time leader in stolen bases, while senior catcher/outfielder Ellis Erickson carries a .398 batting average and a nine-game hit streak.

Earning its fourth straight MAC win, NIU men’s tennis (16-3, 5-1 MAC) defeated the University of Illinois Chicago Flames in a 6-1 victory. The Huskies will take on the University of Buffalo (4-12, 0-7 MAC) and the University of Toledo (9-10, 4-3 MAC) as they look to extend their five match win streak.

Coming off a loss against Eastern Michigan (8-8, 2-2 MAC), the Huskies (12-8, 1-3 MAC) look to take the rematch on Friday when they face them at home, before travelling to Kalamazoo, Michigan, where they will face another conference opponent in Western Michigan University (11-6, 2-2 MAC). 

TRACK AND FIELD

Friday, April 5 – Saturday, April 6 at Hurricane Alumni Invitational

NIU track and field will continue its outdoor season with a trip to Coral Gables, Florida, for the Hurricane Alumni Invitational hosted by the University of Miami. The Huskies are coming off a split squad weekend where the team split time between Texas State University and Illinois State University.

Freshman Arianna Calloway is coming off a first place finish in the high jump at the Texas Relays last weekend. This was the fourth win in the high jump for Calloway this season and the first win of her collegiate outdoor career. 

GYMNASTICS

Thursday, April 4 at NCAA Fayetteville Regional, 1 p.m. CT

After qualifying to NCAA Regionals on Monday, senior Alyssa Al-Ashari and sophomore Kiera O’Shea are set to begin competing at the NCAA Fayetteville Regional during Thursday’s semifinals round.

Al-Ashari will be making her second-straight NCAA Regionals appearance, while O’Shea will be making her regionals debut. The two will compete in the first of two semifinals sessions and rotate with the University of Arkansas.

MEN’S GOLF

Friday, April 5 – Sunday, April 7: at Mason Rudolph Championship

Franklin, Tennessee / Vanderbilt Legends Club

NIU men’s golf competes in the Mason Rudolph Championship, an all-day event stretching from Friday through Sunday at Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tennessee. 

In their last tournament, the Huskies finished tied for 13th place at the Tiger Invitational. Junior Felix Krammer led the pack, finishing tied for 18th place – 11 over par.
